The folks at Wizard Entertainment just posted a brand-spankin’ new interview with Futurama co-creator David X. Cohen, uber-nerd and all around bon vivant. He avoids revealing anything major about the goings-on of the upcoming new episodes, due in 2008 (oh, the wait!), but does spill a bit of new information:
-The new episodes take place two years after “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings” in the continuity.
-…Speaking of which, there will be more continuity between episodes.
-More Seymour, more Nibbler!
-Al Gore is back in the saddle (of the mighty moon worm)!
-The original cast is all back, along with the animators and musical score writer.
-Evil alien nudity.
-The Fry/Leela relationship will be addressed right off the bat.
-And lastly, but most importantly, so important that it can only be quoted in full: “By the way, we are looking into producing a full 22-minute episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad for the DVD release. I am serious.”
Oooo, awsome. But I don’t wanna wait til '08!
But, acording to the IMDB, the movie will be out in '07, and that should tide me over 'til the new episodes.
Somehow, I’m guessing this means either a) They’ve decided to “just be friends,” b) They had a nasty breakup and hate each other (or at least, Leela hates Fry), or c) in the two years that passed, they’ve very carefully and awkwardly managed to keep things status quo. So the writers don’t have to do anything differently.
I think anime has jaded me—no, that’s not completely right. If the show was Japanese, the new episodes might have half the characters dead, too.
