New 'Ghostbusters' Trailer.

None of those quotes say what you claim they say - chiefly, because the only person perceiving the Ghostbusters in this thread as doormats is yourself.

I was claiming that the quotes I selected are from people arguing that this scene was putting sexist idiots in their place. If that’s what this scene was intended to do (which I doubt), then showing the women reacting in a “delicate”, “dumbfounded”, “polite”, “don’t want to upset him” manner is hardly a stringing rebuke to sexism. Those are other people’s descriptions of the women’s behavior, not mine. “Doormat” was my word, but reacting to a sexist idiot who works for you by delicately trying not to upset him is being a doormat.

If Chris Hemsworth isn’t supposed to be a sexist idiot but is instead a nice but kinda clueless guy, which I suspect is the case, then IMHO this isn’t a great scene to use in the trailer but neither is it horribly offensive. But don’t try to tell me it shows a sexist idiot gets skewered when the women are basically just sitting there looking uncomfortable.

I just found the trailer very ‘meh’. It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of humor that’s going to click for me, it felt more ‘you’re supposed to laugh at this’ than ‘this is funny’. Most movie trailers today make me go ‘yeah, I want to see that’ at least for a bit, but this put it into the ‘maybe I’ll catch it on Netflix if someone reminds me about it’ list. Like someone said earlier, 80s trailers are pretty much all trash by today’s standards, so ‘but the original ghostbusters trailer sucks’ isn’t really relevant.

Also, I really don’t like the uniforms for some reason, something seems off about them to me. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but they just don’t seem right.

Well, I would have to guess, and it relates to looking back at the original and seeing it as inspiration for this incarnation. The main characters were archetypes: the nerd (Egon), the “enthusiast” (Ray; I don’t know what to call this, but he’s the one who geeks out about ghosts and is generally positive/optimistic), the horndog (Peter), and the regular guy (Winston). A huge part of the comedy and jokes are based on the scientist characters (in particular Peter but also Ray) being varying degrees of clueless, awkward, or downright inappropriate in their interactions with women. That includes being paternalistic and condescending. Spin that around to this little snippet of this scene – who is in it? – the three scientist characters, being awkward with a member of the opposite sex. Treating him, in my opinion, with a condescending sort of “well, at least you tried the best you can” kind of attitude.

Ultimately, I guess we just see it differently. The guy’s like “hey boobs, ya know, 'cause you’re women” and gets the “you are such a fucking idiot” treatment, and it doesn’t look to me like he’s getting away with anything.

To me , it’s a big hint that you’re supposed to laugh at Patty, not with her. I mean, come on! “The power of Patty compels you?” What the fuck is that?

If the only consequences for him are a frown and an awkward “Ah…” then that’s getting away with it. Elsewhere in the trailer is looks like Hemsworth is treated like a worthy member of the team, not a useless idiot. Which is okay if this is just a dumb boob joke and his character is supposed to be a decent guy. But if he’s supposed to be a sexist idiot representing those who have a problem with the very idea of female Ghostbusters then the “delicate” reaction he gets leaves a lot to be desired.

Again, I was fine with this just being a dumb boob joke. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t feel the need to read some deeper meaning into it. But as soon as I called it a dumb boob joke, I suddenly had a bunch of posters trying to argue with me about how it was really skewering the sexist idiots of the world. That’s a lot of weight for a dumb boob joke to carry, and this one isn’t up to the task.

Is it the boobs? Because I could make 'em biggah.

No, though that’s a good callback and it’s not just that women are wearing them either. The outfits read to me as too ‘styled’ to be utility but not styled enough to look cool. The original ones looked like utility coveralls with a name tag and patch sewed onto them. These read to me like someone was trying to style a costume but stopped halfway through the design, like they were trying to make a cool uniform but got distracted. It wouldn’t kill the movie for me, but does contribute to the feeling that it probably won’t hold together.

Also another thought from earlier in the thread, I always though Venkman in the original was supposed to be a bit creepy, even as a kid I didn’t read him as a clean hero, but as someone sleazy and pushy who kept not doing what he was supposed to do to make a play for the ladies. I think he comes off as more inappropriate by today’s standards, but I never felt like he was supposed to be not doing anything wrong.

…and drops the second trailer:

It's a little better, but it still stars all females.

It looks positively awful.

lol

I know.

I wanted it to be good.

The second trailer made me chuckle only once, at 2:04. Not a good sign.

The second trailer was much better than the first.

Big improvement! Hopefully they fired the guy who made the first one…

Yeah, I don’t think I cracked a smile. Neither did my wife who is still in “Well, maybe it’s just a bad trailer” denial mode.

Okay, the new trailer made me laugh at the end. It was something of an improvement over the last one, which was just obnoxious and unfunny.

Selfie stick!!

I wonder if Hemsworth’s character was hired in order to deal with misogynist people who expect a male to manage the team. (Like the premise of Remington Steele.)

It looks and sounds like a mediocre film. I’m generally annoyed at the idea of yet another reboot/sequel gracing our screens for the usual reason that it bespeaks a lack of innovation and imagination in Hollywood. Frankly, using a female cast is at least doing something novel with the film whether it works or not. I’ll wait for it to hit television before watching (or catch it on a flight, which is where I see most films these days).

Still, as reboots/sequels go it’s gotta be better than the Nth version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (now with extra grittiness!). And as a sidenote, I will add that while I find most of McCarthy’s work uneven, I really liked Spy. So there’s that.

I’ll probably go see this, because my wife so desperately wants Hollywood to start making women-centered action films. I expect it to be mediocre, but that’s fine, I can watch a mediocre movie, done it before. Maybe it’ll make me laugh.
