New Godzilla footage

The first new Godzilla movie footage is monstrously awesome" Courtesy of our friends at i09. Looks promising, like a return to the first Japanese movie.

They took the trailer down due to copy right claims.

Dang

<Homer>Awww, but I wanted to see Godzilla…</Homer>

I knew there had to be something good coming out of the Fukushima disaster.

I saw the footage before it got taken down. First shots are of a city, totally wrecked, debris everywhere, smoke billowing and the camera slowly pans to the right and you realize that what at first seems to be the side of a mountain or something is actually Godzilla, then there’s a fade to black, then again, similar shot of devastation and smoke, this time panning up as it gets to Godzilla, and you see him from behind…he turns his head to profile and lets out a roar…the design of the monster is very traditional Godzilla, updated a little bit in terms of detail and realism, but the basic Godzilla-ness is definitely there.

I’m a monster movie fan from way back. But when I saw the trailer my feeling was, “More of this? Really?” I guess Toho made tons of successful Godzilla/giant monster movies over the years, so yet another American-made giant monster movie isn’t unprecedented. It’s hard for me to imagine what could be brought to this that could freshen it up. I wonder if the film makers had the same problem? I guess we’ll see. Well, some people will see. Unless it gets rave reviews, I won’t be seeing.

Here it is again. Probably will be taken down soon. One of the comments notes that the background sound is from *2001: A Space Odyssey. *

I hear a few seconds of György Ligeti’s “Adventures” in there, a composition Stanley Kubrick used in an altered form, apparently without permission, in “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Ligeti (who died in 2001!) sued and settled out of court.

I think the first monster is not Godzilla, but a monster Godzilla has defeated.

randwill, check out Gareth Edwards movie Monsters. I have mixed feelings about that flick–I found the leads unsympathetic and annoying–but it did achieve a certain haunting moodiness which is rare in a giant monster movie. There was more emphasis on people dealing with being in the monsters’ path than the monsters themselves. It’s an interesting if not entirely successful movie. I think he could bring a new vision to this hoary franchise.

I suspect they will have different music composed by the time the movie is released, but they needed something for the trailer.

I like a good monster flick–and I like that the shots of the damage includes bodies strewn about. So many disaster films show destruction while keeping the human element out of it.

Actually, I like a lot of bad monster flicks too, so undoubtedly I’ll be seeing this one. It already looks better than the 1998 debacle. (MAN, that thing pissed me off in just how lame in was.)

Yep, I’m a total sucker for giant monster movies, too. Godzilla is the greatest of them. I agree, the “realism” of the destruction in the trailer is actually heartening. It makes it seem less likely that this will echo the worst of the Toho studio’s version, and possibly by most like the original since, well, Gojira.

The Oppenheimer quote in the trailer gave me chills, too. I can’t hear that without reacting.

Yeah, I think you’re right about that.

I knew that one was going to be terrible, Emmerich & Devlin are the two biggest hacks in Hollywood (ID4, Day After Tomorrow, 2012). I like the look of this, including Godzilla itself (doesn’t look like an iguana!) Plus I love how they tweaked the roar just a tiny bit, sounds more scary & modern but still close enough to the original.

I just saw it, so as of now it’s still there. Very cool trailer, I liked the quotation from Oppenheimer.

I love how Openheimer says" “Vishnu takes on his multi-armed form” jsut as the camera pans to the right and reveals the lifeless(?) monster’s multiple arms.
I’m going to see this in the theater.

This gives me great hope that the movie will be well worth it.

It looks like the city was destroyed by these guys, and GZ has come to the rescue!

I’m glad I checked it out earlier when it was still there, because I just looked for it again and got a message the URL couldn’t be found.
