New hosts of Great British Bake Off announced

Does anyone know if the Netflix versions are unedited or if they trimmed them down? My first episode was 53 minutes long.

They’re edited in that they don’t have Mel and Sue’s “Baking Bites” segment at the very end, but that’s it, as far as I can tell (I’m rewatching Season 1 right now, btw).

In the original broadcast version, the historical segments were interspersed in the episode, not at the end.

I am enjoying the first two episodes of the first season available on Netflilx, but I have realized they do not have all of the 7 seasons that aired on TV. Anyone know what season I am? I don’t want to spoil who the winner is by looking it up. It’s listed as Season 1 on Netflix and the first episode was “Cakes” and the second was “Biscuits”.

Anyway, I’m kind of surprised how much I like it. It does not have the constant recapping that other shows have when they resume from commercial break, namely because this show cleary has no breaks.

I like how it just moves along, challenge to challenge. The positivity is nice, too.

My 8 year-old daughter would love this show!

You might have to list the contestants … or the short version, the name/s of ethnic minorities or men/women.

I’m like 95% certain that it’s
Netflix Season 1 = Great British Bake Off Series 5
Netflix Season 2 = Great British Bake Off Series 4
Netflix Season 3 = Great British Bake Off Series 6

This is kind of what I figured.

I can’t describe any of the people too well. One is a 17 year-old girl. The first person asked to leave was an overweight Brunette lady who just did very badly on all tasks. The second was a Black guy with 4 kids who was nice, but screwed up his biscuit display thingy.

There is a very nervous guy with bad teeth who is lucky to still be there.

There are some really talented people, like an older lady who wins a lot.

In my season, one guy with a thick beard tried to score his Swiss Roll to improve the rolling of it, but it ended up folding more than rolling. It was pretty funny.

Okay, as per above, you’re watching S5.

S6 was the record-breaker in terms of audiences. If you enjoy it that’s the one to not miss.

OK, so I have to know.

Why are they in a tent? Is there a reason for this show being filmed in a tent?

The first season they moved all over the UK based on what was being baked that week. I assume the tent was to make it easier to move and set up and now that they stay in the same place, they just go with it because it’s kind of iconic at this point.

I heard that when they did travel around the world, they weren’t in the tent. Were they?

They tinkered with the format in various ways. I guess they settled on a tent because it’s evocative of English summer village fetes, where you might find cake baking competitions. Hence the Union Jack bunting and light-hearted gaiety. It also supports the whole ‘keen amateur’ theme.

Not unlike this:

I love this msg board.
I just started watching on Netflix myself and am on the first Netflix season and think its a good show. This thread answered some questions I was thinking about.

My new obsession is looking up and watching old seasons of Project Runway , Australia (whew not used to them not bleeping out the f bombs) I love it Season 2 was great. Thats the one I started to watch on youtube and season 1 has a lot of missing episodes that I have to really search for and if I find the buffering kills me.

I’ve never seen a season that wasn’t in the tent and in fact Mary Berry doesn’t do airplanes so even the US Christmas crossover season was done in the UK in the tent.

Do the “real” first seasons stream anywhere? I don’t get why Netflix only has the three seasons they do.

This has become “family viewing” for Mrs. Mahaloth, me, and my 8 and 6-year old children. We love it.

When the builder turned around and helped 17-year old Martha with her Eclairs, we paused the TV and told our kids, “Now, that is how you compete.” He did not have to help her with her tough situation, but these people genuinely want each other to do well. I love it!

If you look, you can find older seasons on YouTube (like season 1).

The earlier seasons amused me because it seemed like every single time in the confessionals, if a baker had done well, they were chuffed (chuffed to bits if they got star baker) and gutted if they had been found lacking.

It’s a nod to traditional English country fayres/garden fetes, where big tents are put up and the locals bring their cakes/sheep/giant marrows along to be judged by ageing Miss Marple’s.

It’s the Great British Bake Off remember, so it’s playing on nostalgia. Hence also the Union Jack bunting.
