New-ish "free speech" app, Parler

from Psychology Today,

One might infer that extreme homophobia is a response to experiencing sexual feelings that a person has been taught they are not supposed to have.

Yeah, I’ve never liked that theory. It implies that straight man can’t be homophobes.

Not really. The implication is that one subdivision of homophobes is self-conflicted homosexual wannabes.

It does not imply there can’t be other subdivisions.

I’m not sure they can’t be, but they may be less likely to bother to be, i.e. gay sex doesn’t cause a physical response, hence they don’t form an aversive mental response.

No, straight men can certainly be homophobes. But the really extreme ones, like the ones who try to want to abolish our rights to marry or adopt children, tend to be repressed gay men.

It’s happened so often I’ve lost count, whenever someone expresses extremely homophobic views, I just automatically assume they are gay and hate themselves for it, and so take it out on the rest of us who are actually happy with our living our queer lives.

Yeah, there’s casual homophobes, who if the topic of gay rights naturally arises in conversation will express their displeasure, but otherwise won’t think too much about it. I don’t think anyone imagines all of them to be closeted.

But there is whole other level of homophobes who think about gay sex more than actual (out) gay people do. And that’s where you get the surprisingly high levels of “caught soliciting in a men’s room” situations.

This is why conservatives are moving to Parler:

Or out and out gay men, who for political purposes decide to act like homophobes.

(and Homophobes is a bad term, mind you, but …)

Wait, the Babylon Bee is big-c Conservative? I guess I’ve never really looked past the funny Onion-esque headlines my non-partisan friends share on FB.

The Babylon Bee is run by a bunch of c-words for sure.

It’s fascinating that so many big corporations show that sort of bias. What does that say about the strength of the corporate wing of the democratic party?

Nothing, but it says plenty about their customer base’s toleration of homophobia.

Pretty pathetic if conservatives are getting that pissed off over a few momentary, accidental, and/or rescinded Twitter suspensions.

On the other hand, if conservatives genuinely object to Twitter’s policies against homophobic and otherwise bigoted speech because it’s interfering with their attempts to express homophobic and otherwise bigoted opinions, then sure, I think voluntarily moving to a more homophobia- and bigotry-friendly site like Parler is clearly the right move for them. Godspeed and God bless.

Two months is “momentary”? Also it seems odd that these “accidental” suspensions seem to happen mostly to conservatives.

It doesn’t happen mostly to conservatives. They’re just the ones who constantly whine that it’s because they are conservatives, and not because their posting patterns are indistinguishable from a spambot.

So you agree, conservatives skew towards homophobic and bigoted views.

Maybe some do but liberals do also and there are no consequences. Bigotry gets you promoted:

So let’s see if I understand Agzem. You say twitter should censor people for statements they made 50 years ago, prior to the platforms existence. Because this is a thread about social media and how speech is or is not protected. Now, I do not dispute that bigotry and homophobia have been an issue in our society looooong before social media, and that people (including, gasp, ones that are or lean Dem) have used them as slurs.
But the point is that maybe, just maybe, in 50 years (since you use a cite from freaking 1977) both people and society could change? That we might learn to be better, more inclusive, individuals?
So back to the OP - I honestly support the existence of Parler - not that I’d ever want to use it, because it is self-selecting for people who piss me off. One of the reasons I support it is that considering RW extremism has been identified as a major source of threat by our government, that it will provide an easier way to find and track such extremists.
And if Parler fails due to market pressures - well, that’s it’s own business. I mean, I wouldn’t want to advertise next to porn or hate, but there will be business that don’t mind. Will there be enough to support the platform if it has additional growth? Well, there’s a question. And would Trump ever, ever abandon Twitter where he can have @88 million followers, to go to Parler which has an estimated 8 million even with the election and his ranting against twitter?
Nothing in his past indicates this… although he might if after he leaves office, since he’s no longer going to get to enjoy the same kid gloves on verifiably false tweets and incitements to hate.

The crucial word in this statement is do and you cannot consider 40 and 50 year-old statements as present tense. And in what way does this get you promoted. What it gets you is criticism. Please stick to reality.
