I think it bears more than a passing resemblance to the White Star from B5.

Possibly, but not necessarily. That plane is what is known as a box-wing or joined-wing aircraft. It reduces induced drag (which is caused by vortexes that arise at the tips of the wings) by simply not having wing tips. It can also have structural advantages, but I don’t recall quite as much about that as I do about the aerodynamic benefits.
