Sometimes I feel so very lonely.
Don’t worry, Fiver. I got it.
Utulien aure! Auta e lome!
A Elbereth Gilthoniel,
silivren penna míriel,
Iä! Iä! Shub-Niggurath!
Wait, I think I got a bit confused.
I bow to no one in geekiness–I’ve been tracking the movie on Coming attractions/corona.com for 3 years; check the web sites (theonering.net, theonering.com) every day; check rec.arts.books.tolkien (where the balrog wings debate raged) periodically; downloaded all the trailers as they’re released. But I think I’ve reached saturation–I’m at the point where I don’t wanna see no more, I want to be surprised. I feel like I’ve seen the whole thing already.
But I am very, very happy with what I’ve seen so far.
Tom Bombadil is definitely gone. (no big loss, for me)
Glorfindel’s role is taken by Arwen (Liv tyler). Rumors that Arwen’s role would be expanded even more, to the point where she accompanies the Fellowship to Helm’s Deep (the XenArwen Warrior Princess scenario), are untrue. (Poor Glorfindel–he was replaced in the Bakshi version by Legolas).
We’re to pity Glorfindel, for managing to escape being portrayed by Bakshi? Pity Legolas, rather, who had to put up with more than his fair share.
Speaking of Legolas, I have no clue how much is computer enhancement, and how much is the actor just doing a damn fine job. Either way, it looks amazing… Which is, after all, what a movie’s all about.
I think KeithB gave a good version and much shorter than I probably would have done. You really don’t want the long one in this thread. Besides, I’d surely mess up a detail or two, and I couldn’t bear the shame.
Geek wires getting crossed.
Why do I always think that “A Elbereth Gilthoniel” is followed “and ransom captive Israel”?
Just saw it.
I can’t wait!
It’s even worse! I hear they are combining into one character: Strider, Aragorn, Estel, Ellesar, Elfstone, Telcontar, Thorongil, Wingfoot, Longshanks…
Sorry, I couldn’t help it.
As for Gimli and Gloin, in the frame-by-frame analysis at theonering.net, in the scenes at the Council of Elrond there looks like there are at least THREE Dwarves present, one of whom looks older, greyer, balder. Gloin?
The trailers are turning me into the spoiled, whiny four-year old I once was…
I wanna see it NOOOOOOOOOWW!!
No! No! I can’t WAIT till Christmas, NOW!
** Drachillix** doesn’t love me. He says he does, but he really doesn’t, cuz he won’t let me see the movie NOW!
Is Gimlet, son of Groin in it?
Did you notice whether the older, greyer, balder fellow had a beard? (I don’t have it on mine own computer, so I can’t frame-by-frame it myself.) Bilbo, of course, was also at the Council.
I didn’t notice Bilbo, but there are definitely at least two dwarves in the shot that shows Frodo at the table with the ring.
Voila: (French for: “I have just reached the limit of my pathetic computer-related abilities”)

In the 6th frame down on the second page which is linked above is the scene from the Council of Elrond. It will be enlarged if you click on it. Frodo is in the foreground center, on the left in the background there are Elvish looking beings. On the right in the background there are two Dwarvish figures: short (well, they are sitting, but still), stocky, bearded and at the extreme right is a half-cut-off figure that looks equally Dwarvish. If you look at the central “Dwarf” (meaning the rightmost whole one) he is definitely balder and greyer than the other to his right (viewers left). I think he is even holding a cane of some sort. Now that I look closely at it again, I’m not sure if that figure to his right (leftmost Dwarf in the frame) is John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) or not. So that’s why I said three Dwarves, one of whom could be Gloin.
Jeez, now that I read this I’m starting to sound like seethruart.
I enlarged the frame around the enlargement. The rightmost of the three Dwarves is Gimli (John Rhys-Davies). So that leaves two more. Grumpy? Dopey?
I’m going to bed.
Before some weisenheimer beats me to it:
It can’t be Dopey. He didn’t have a beard.
Oh, thank you very much. I’ll never be able to think of it the right way again.
As far as the trailer goes: DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
That is all.
I was going to start a thread asking for all of Aragorn’s names, but decided to be a good girl and do a search first. So, Laughing Lagomorph, are there more?
