I have a “Betty” magnolia tree that I planted a few years ago. It gets beautiful pink blossoms in the spring. I just noticed that there are two big buds near the top of the tree, ready to open in a day or two.
How common is it for a magnolia to bloom again, this late in the season?
My magnolia also blooms throughout the season. However, that season is only July to August up here here near Seattle. I’m just now seeing buds form this year. We had a really warm summer a couple years ago and saw a corresponding longer blooming season that went from June to September.
I’m not exactly sure which kind of magnolia we have because it was here when we moved in. In looking up some information, I seem to recall that some types either bloom all season or will go through two blooms.
It is not uncommon at all for a second ‘blooming’. I have had plenty of Magnolia ‘Janes’ give a light flowering late in season, especially ones that are in good health/vigor. The blooms the next Spring were reduced, of course, but nothing harmful to the plant.
‘Betty’ magnolia is one of the Little Girls series of crosses between M.liliflora and M. stellata. As I recall, ‘Betty’ is later blooming, and sterile, so the energy of development of seed pods doesn’t happen, making rebloom likely. Purty gal, that Betty.
