New messages aren't shown....

When there’s a new message in a thread, the envelope is red. But sometimes I’ll post a thread, move to another forum, come back to the previous forum to find that the “last post” name isn’t mine but the envelope isn’t red either. Is this happening because of something I’m doing?

The envelope color seems to be determined by whether or not the thread has been updated since the last time your cookie was refreshed (i.e. the timestamp in the cookie is compared to the timstamp on the thread). Even if someone posts after you, if the cookie is refreshed after that the envelope will show grey.

At least, that’s how it appears to me to work.

My Q is, under which conditions (other than the obvious one of refreshing/visiting the board’s home page) is the cookie updated?

I think you’ve explained it pretty well. At least, that’s how I understand it.

What also complicates the issue is that people don’t always see the most recent version when they call for a page; it’s faster for their ISP to send them a (previously) cached page than it is for them to move you out to the web, get the page, etc. AOL is especially bad about this, but I’m sure other companies do it too.

If ever in doubt, hit “Shift”" + Refresh, or “CNTRL” + Refresh and you should see the most recent version of the page.

Thanks to both of you. That was driving me crazy.

When I hit refresh or control refresh or shift refresh from a thread, it takes me back to the SD home page. I use internet explorer. What am I doing wrong?
