Why are some envelopes red? It doesn’t appear to have anything to do with threads opened, or the date/time, or the amount of activity. In one forum, every envelope was red; in another, two were red – ???
I looked at the FAQ and even tried a search.

I think now the colors change if anything has been added to a thread since the last time you visited that forum, but it doesn’t seem to be 100% accurate. I think it gives me a better idea of what I haven’t read than the old software.
Red envelopes represent threads that have new posts that you haven’t read (i.e., it’s changed since the last time you were there.)

Hey, Pam, it’s just the same thing as the difference between red folders and yellow folders, you know, red folders have “new posts since the last time you logged on.”
I thought you were complaining about the COLOR. I think the gray is triple-yuck myself, but I promised Tuba not to complain about the curtains till she had all the boxes unpacked.
I agree about the gray. I didn’t care for the color to start with, and now I’ve noticed that it makes it really hard to see the gray padlock on locked threads. OK, so whenever lovely Tuba gets around to fiddling with the curtains, that’s on the list! No rush!:)
