New motherboard with fancy audio. 7.1+2 channel high definition audio that provides ten DAC channels.
All I want is sound for a normal set of $20 desktop computer speakers.
Which jack is for plain stereo?
I can’t believe all this junk. They have Center, Front, Side Surround, and back jacks.
So which jack is supposed to be used? Does it matter?
It seems like all the motherboards have this fancy audio these days. It’s a major PITA.
I’m trying the front (green) jack. The sound I’m getting has this weird echo/reverb in my speakers.

Front/green should be correct. Echo/reverb? Check the sound settings – it’s likely a speaker-ish icon in the system tray (lower right of your screen) – for any fancy effects, SRS settings, blah blah. Disable everything that sounds like marketing.
Ok. There’s a special Realtek sound app that got installed with the driver. Maybe something in it is set wrong. I’ll try disabling what I can.
So I can ignore the other jacks and only use front/green?

Yes. Read the manual if you want to be sure, but that’s almost always the correct port.

You’ll probably also want to set the audio to two speakers. I think even the default driver from Windows has that option. And, yes, green is the usually the standard color, and front is usually the ones you use.
I found the 2 speaker setting in windows. Got it set.
The mb manual was little help. It just shows the jack panel with very little explanation.
thanks again.
I Got curious and google’d 7.1 speaker sets. They include 8 pieces.
This cnet article has a diagram of how to set it up. Heck you can’t hardly move or stretch without knocking one over. :dubious:

I can imagine my bosses reaction to something like that in my office. You’d never get any real work done.
I’ll stick with stereo.

You probably want to stick with the green socket at the back . That way you can use the front pair for a headset for voice comms.
