New movie "Vaxxed" reopens discussion about the link between autism and vaccines

You seem to never get tired of pushing links to people that are only spreading falsehoods. The video you linked here is just a textbook example of misinformation coming from Del Bigtree. And one of the worst examples of “playing the race card” ever seen. Del Bigtree is talking about “fraud” in the CDC regarding the dismissal of an increased incidence of Autism among African Americans.

Not even one? Not even a token gesture?

Not even a “Nope, no amount of evidence will change my mind?”

I refuse to spend one goddamned cent to fund their bullshit. I’m not supporting that kind of dangerous crap that could affect countless lives. Here in Pittsburgh is where Jonas Salk first developed and distributed his polio vaccine. In fact, one of his assistants was our school nurse when I was in high school. To have such filth play here is an insult to his memory.

You know how annoying it is when antivaxxers ask for research and then conveniently forget all about it?

Turns out it’s even more annoying when THEY fund the research and it STILL shows no link between MMR and autism EVEN WHEN THEY USED THIMEROSAL(which isn’t in the MMR anymore) …and then they conveniently forget all about it.

Well, you can’t blame him. She very cleverly tried to hide it behind the phrase “Spanish penal code.”

But they have such nice T-shirts for sale on their site! There’s even one with a scary-looking hypodermic syringe and toxic-looking blue smoke coming out of it.

Seriously, this actually pisses me off even more than another classic of fraudulent propagandizing, The Great Global Warming Swindle. The latter involves a longer-term problem and the bullshit tends to fade as the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence permeates the public awareness. The problem with the anti-vax bullshit is that parents are making immediate and highly consequential decisions for their children based on deliberate lies. Wakefield alone has been found guilty of so much malfeasance, and the scientific evidence is so abundant, that it’s impossible that the principals involved in this film are unaware that they’re dangerous deceivers. That makes them tantamount to criminals endangering children.

Maybe if you had spent less time promoting the movie, and more time paying attention the responses to your own thread?

How is this even in Great Debates? There is no debate to be had! The man who made the movie is the one who lost his medical license when it was demonstrated that he fabricated the ‘evidence’ attempting to show a link to autism and vaccines.

Face it. You really don’t want to address any of the responses. You just want to validate your feeling about your situation. I possibly would also if I had an autistic child. I’d be devastated at first, then looking for some answers. I’d grasp at anything that helped me feel that there was some magic answer that would explain why autism occurs and could be prevented. I’d resist posters on this board who keep feeding me facts when I can go see a movie which purports to explain what happened. I’d grasp at straws. It would take years to wear me down with the facts. I hope you find peace, but—please please quit trying to convince the choir here that you know what caused it. You don’t. I’ll pray that you realize this some day in the future.

The MMR vaccine has never had thimerosal.

It seems to me that the vaccine scares were different in the UK and the US. In the UK, it was centered around the MMR vaccine, and the idea that they shouldn’t give three vaccines at once.

In the US, the scare was around vaccines that contained thimerosal, such as the DTaP and flu vaccines, but not MMR.

I’ve read the OP and a couple of the responses, but I haven’t had time to go through the whole thread. So it sounds like the jury’s still out on this vaccination-autism thing?

ETA: I’ll get me coat.

In fact, if the antivaxxers think this is such a huge important healthcare crisis, why are they restricting their “documentary” to a limited theatrical distribution at all? Why aren’t they just putting it up on their website so as many people as possible can easily access it and be “enlightened” by its “valuable” “information”?

These folks are behaving 100% like unscrupulous scammers and 0% like people activated by genuine concern for a serious public-health issue.

What would that do?

Convince everyone that you’re point of view is correct?

That’s how science works. Present your evidence and if it’s compelling, people will be able to see that.

Likewise, you might want to read over the evidence people have presented that is contrary to your original understanding. Science is wonderful that way.

Well we all know that in general vaccines are good and have been part of (along with clean water and sanitation) the elimination of some of the worlds most deadly diseases (like smallpox and polio).

The issue now is not are vaccines good (they are) but 1. what should we be vaccinated against 2. at what age should children get those vaccinations 3. should the vaccines be lumped together with other vaccines into a mega vaccine 4. could the vaccines affect certain people differently 5. what chemicals and preservatives should be part of vaccines 6. could vaccines have side effects 7. should the pharmaceutical companies who make the vaccines be shielded from liability suits.

And what we would like to know is if you ever intend to respond to the comments about your OP and the many answers to your supposed dilemmas given by various posters.

Urbanredneck, sorry mate - you have not finally found a sympathetic voice. I was being ironic. You’re just 100% wrong on this one, I’m afraid.

So, this isn’t a debate or discussion, in any way at all!

Just purposely spreading dangerous medical misinformation?

How does that jive with a board ‘fighting ignorance’?

Witnessing

If studies confirmed a link between the MMR vaccine and autism, it would then be worth asking these questions, to figure out how best to protect children against measles, mumps and rubella while minimizing the risk of autism. But since studies have found there is no link, these questions are irrelevant, and only serve to distract people.
