New Netflix show - Wet Hot American Summer

First season was released today. I’m on ep. 5 so far. Biggest cast of A-list comedy actors you’ve ever seen. While it has some good moments, it’s not really tremendously funny. Something that always seems to happen with big ensemble casts. Maybe there’s just too much going on, or they’re trying too hard. But I’ll keep watching.

It’s a spinoff of a movie. That wasn’t very funny either.

That’s what I felt was wrong with the movie. I haven’t watched any of the new series.

I posted a thread on this a few weeks ago and got 0 responses.

I just finished episode 5. I’ve had some actual lol moments so far, though few and far between.

However, it’s still enjoyable to sit through and see what happens.

One thing I haven’t seen yet is Rudd’s character allowing any swimmers to drown, or tossing witnesses out of a moving van. I mean, come on!

Ok, having seen the last 2 episodes, I need to update my review.

Yawn

The movie wasn’t great, but it did have some good moments. Those moments were totally lacking from this new series.

And really, why else would you watch a show with such a ridiculous premise?

So out of 4 hours of content, I got a few genuine laugh out loud moments, as well as a little nostalgia for life 14 years ago. But that’s really it.

I loved the movie. The trailers for the series, though, left me cold. “If those are the highlights…” kind of thinking.

Also they were giving me the impression that the writers were forgetting that it’s all supposed to be a parody of 80s summer camp wacky summer hijinx movies, not just an example of one.

Never heard of it. What’s wet? What’s hot?

I think this is pretty much the entire reason to watch it. Every time you turn around, there’s another big name out of nowhere. It’s fun to watch, even if the show itself isn’t especially funny (though it does have its moments).

I keep expecting it to get better.

Yeah, even Weird Al Yankovic had a little role.

I actually think it does get a bit better as time goes on. The scene with “The Falcon” in the little grocery store had me laughing out loud.

I’m sure I’ll finish the episodes, I watched the first two. While I haven’t had any LOL moments yet, I am enjoying so many well known actors all in one place. It just doesn’t seem quite tongue in cheek enough. Dare I say it kinda needs to be raunchier?

Is the “A list” cast the same group of then-B-to-Z list people from the movie, or are there additional higher-profile cast members now?

I had no clue who Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, or Amy Poehler were were at the time, and now they’re ultra marketable.

Kind of disappointing to hear, but I’ll still check it out. I rewatched the movie the other day.

Well according to IMDB, the film (which I never saw) had Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Amy Poehler, Joe Lo Truglio, Bradley Cooper, and more… all those are super well-known, prolific, and in the series, plus many more. So I don’t know who you are thinking of.

I finished watching the show yesterday. It wasn’t laugh out loud funny except for a few moments, but I thought it was funny. It is like the movie, so if you don’t like the movie, definitely don’t watch the show.

I binge-watched the whole thing Saturday night and Sunday morning. I’m not sure if they were trying to be funny and failing or just parodying bad summer camp movies, but either way it was interesting and funny enough to hold my interest. I’m guessing much of the humor is supposed to be surreal and nonsensical. Random observations:

I thought the little curly-haired kid’s story was pretty much a downer but in a way it’s refreshing that they didn’t do the entire cliche story of “shy kid stands up to bully and gets the girl.”

The inconsistent hot girlfriend character was pretty maddening, they never did really explain what her deal was. Of course Coop was a huge doormat.

I found it funny how people that are 40+ years old were playing teenagers.

It’s really weird to hear Archer’s voice come out of a scruffy bald guy’s mouth.

Elizabeth Banks is really hot.

Who is the actor who played the guy that Janeane Garofalo spent the night in the hotel with? He looks really familiar. He sort of looks like a modern-day Davy Jones of The Monkees.

Davy Jones is none other than Jason Schwartzman.

One thing I really hated from the show was how some of the gags were stretched too long and just didn’t work. Example 1: Rudd’s snarl at the beginning. Example 2: the slow motion runs. Etc. They amounted more to a cringe than a laugh.

Also, Ken Marino’s Victor was giving Ricardo Montalban’s Khan a run for his money in the chest department.

It seems to be mostly a type of joke that I don’t really get: An exaggeratedly simple-minded version of things that seem like they are common things to happen in movies.

Perhaps I haven’t seen enough 80s movies, and if I had, I would find it funnier. As it is, I don’t.

Among the few things I liked were:

  • Jon Hamm’s intro scene.

  • Elizabeth Banks getting away with pretending to be 16 although she is “actually” 24.

  • The revelation that Jon Hamm was good the whole time even though it didn’t make sense.

  • The foreign guy actually saying “turd”.
