New Netflix show - Wet Hot American Summer

Ah, thanks. I still don’t recognize him from anything he has done. I think he looks like Kevin Rose, that is probably who I was thinking of.

Yeah the Jon Hamm actually being good in spite of killing several people didn’t make sense and I guess wasn’t supposed to, but I thought the scene where Garafalo kept pushing for an explanation was funny.

The Israeli guy I actually recognized as David Wain, who worked with Showalter and Black, and many other Wet Hot and Reno 911 actors on The State.

ETA: Ah, the reclusive rocker was Chris Pine, who plays Kirk on the new Star Trek movies.

There is some very funny stuff in the show but I also think it missed the mark a few times. Some of the better stuff is from the charisma of the actors themselves, I think.

The funniest two bits imo were Paul Rudd’s character telling someone that they had something in their nose and then waved his fart at them. The second was Elizabeth Banks calling herself something like a “sexually mature 26 year old with a career” when comparing herself to the camp group.

And there’s a callback to Marino’s most famous character…

I know a lot of this is “setting up” stuff that happens/happened in the movie but I don’t remember a lot of specifics about the movie. I plan on watching that again when I get the chance.

I’m on episode 6 and really digging it, but I loved the movie and I really like the Wain/Showalter style of comedy. A lot of people loathed Stella, even fans of the Stella shorts, but I thought the one season TV series on Comedy Central was brilliant. It took me two watches though before it clicked. It’s not that it’s such sophisticated humor that you have to watch it over again to get the laughs or that it’s layered like Arrested Development or Community. It’s that it’s so absurd and stupid that the mind has to sort of relax into the absurdity. At least for me.
