Nike has a new commercial featuring women’s soccer players. It uses clips from “American Woman” by The Guess Who.
I think there are plenty of people out there that will remember the whole message from the song, and it doesn’t fit.

Huh. I never paid much attention to the lyrics, but I knew it wasn’t exactly positive, what with the whole “American Woman, stay away from me” part. I also didn’t realize that what I hear on the radio isn’t the whole version, either, until today, looking up the lyrics and trying to find the version with the rest of the lyrics in the beginning.
I would guess more don’t than do. My daughter currently plays D1 soccer and I’m sure she doesn’t know the original lyrics completely (she does know one of the players in the commercial in question though).
It is supposed to be what they are thinking. It starts out with AW… gonna mess your mind… and they are showing them frustrated with their practice, but then they come together as a team and it changes to AW… stay away from me, which I think is supposed to again be in their voice since they are giving the other team mean looks and kicking butt.
Getting out of your own mind set and frustrations is often more of a challenge than the physical aspect (they are all great athletes)… you know you have a good team when they can pull everyone together to have the confidence to win without their own insecurities after a bad practice.
