New Robert Altman-Neve Campbell film "The Company"

I’ve been an avid Neve Campbell fan ever since I was a little kid watching episodes of Party of Five. She was my first real celebrity crush, so I’ve kept up with her career over the years. She’s taken a lot of independent film roles over these past few years, including the excellent Panic with Donald Sutherland and William H. Macy.

On Christmas this year, her new movie The Company is getting a limited release. I don’t know much about dancing, but my SO has been in ballet since she was a little girl, and since I have been into Neve Campbell since I was a little boy, we finally have the perfect date movie. (In all honesty, I am interested in the subject matter, too, and I just like to see a good film every once in a while.)

Trivialities aside, this is getting pretty good reviews at Rotten Tomatoes so far. Robert Altman directs with Barbara Turner (Pollock) as screenwriter, but apparently Neve Campbell came up with the story and developed it with Barbara Turner. The trailer is available online and it looks pretty damn good.

So what do you guys think about this movie? Will it be good or bad? Will it be because of or despite Neve Campbell’s involvement? Is anyone else excited about its release?

I just hope it goes into a wider release than LA and New York.

I saw it the other night and enjoyed it, but this film should definitely come with a plot-free warning for those who require one. It’s a year in the life of the Joffrey Ballet Company. The film is full of real life incidents – some funny, some sad – that actually happened, but there is no story per se.

The dancing reminded me of Cirque de Soleil. I don’t know if that reflects the actually Joffrey style or if it was for the sake of the non-ballet going movie audience (like me). Robert Altman spoke after the showing. He had no special interest in doing a ballet movie until Neve asked him. The final ballet in the movie is a piece that Neve had seen as a child that was never performed again (until this movie) because it’s remarkable set was too expensive.

I’m very excited to see this movie because I’m a big fan of Robert Altman. He has done a number of movies that have a disjointed style that I have really enjoyed. I’m not a big fan of ballet, but I do enjoy ballet and dance movies, so I think that I’ll really enjoy this movie. I’ve never seen Neve Campbell before, so her involvement isn’t going to impact me one way or the other. Maybe this movie will make me a fan.
