New RPG: Drakensang

Drakensang comes out February 24th on the PC and looks real cool. It’s from the Dark Eye rules system which is a classic and I’m sure you RPG fanatics know it pretty well.

The graphics look awesome the game was out last year in Germany and got a ton of awards. Check out the trailer and screens:

Looks intriguing but I worry. Usually European games form indi developers get mangled up in translation. Look at the otherwise great Witcher (before the latest patch/relaunch). You typically end up with poor quality voice work and mangled, undecipherable plot and dialogue.

Hopefully they’ll release a demo, I definitely would like to try it out.

You mean like the one on thatr very website, under “demo” ?

I had to navigate away from the demo page and then back to get the download link to load properly. I’ve only played for a few minutes, and the voice acting isn’t fantastic, but it’s not bad at all and the controls look sound. I will have to change the keys for controlling the camera.

Also, the elf is hot.

ha! Missed that. Ok, I’ll download and try it.

Going to have to give this a shot. The screen shots remind me of Gothic.

This looks cool, I have been craving a good RPG to play. I am downloading the demo now.

I played the demo. Looks very interesting. The controls were not well described; I am hoping there’s a little more to the opening of the game. Still, the gam was well done and with a fair variety to it. I played as the Dwarf mercenary.

Right now I’m actually laying out my character. I want to try Spears and having some healing magic. Probably be a more stealth-oriented character, yes…

Edit: The only problem I have is that the game is very, very unclear. Amost none of the statistics or mechanisms are really explained, so I was sort of left in the dakr about how things work. I hoping the manual will explain it.

Well, it’s only a demo, obviously the final game is going to come with a comprehensive manual that’s going to detail what you need to know.
The demo’s just here to get you interested after all and it does a real good job of that. The setting and graphics looks great and they did a good job teasing the right amount of gameplay to get me interested and wanted to play more.

It’s when you say “obviously” that I wonder. Some game companies don’t quite do that. Even RPG’s.

Wow… I figured the board would go wild over Drakensang. I mean, any RPG with a system that is good, yet suitable for low-powered computers…

Well it’s a demo…
Something about the game reminds me of the Witcher, only the graphics aren’t as good (although they probably will be tweaked a bit in the final release). It’s a bit confusing in some aspects with no manual.

The good bits are: the game does seem pretty cool, interesting quests and so on. Kinthalis mentioned translation problems since it’s not a native english language developer. From the brief bit I’ve seen in the demo, it won’t have any mangled english or translation issues.

I’ll check some reviews when it’s released (24 February), but I’m almost definitely going to pick it up. Looks to be a solid, fun game.

There are definitely a few people on here pumped for Drakensang, but you’re right I thought more would be into the RPG, especially one in a classic setting like this one is.
