I felt exactly the same way about both Wollander and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, though the former remake was British rather than American.
Oh well that’s alright, then: bring on the walking dildos.
I didn’t think he was.
I am wondering how good the next series will be without William Hurt and Odie. For me, they were the most interesting part of the show; Hurt was amazing to watch, and the idea of him caring for Odie, the synth who still occasionally had memories of the late Mrs Hurt, while still completely knowing that Odie wasn’t real, was one of the few new areas the show explored.
I didn’t mind that they explored a lot of old tropes too - the ground is well-trodden, anyway; they did do it pretty well. The scene where [spoiler] was shown to be a synth was really well shot.
A few oddities that stick in my mind:[ul]
[li]Mia/Anita’s fascination with the moon. It was touched on a couple of times in the first episode, but I don’t recall it being mentioned since.[/li][li]The whole ideal of “sharing”. Color me paranoid, but if I were designing an entity that could learn from experience and adapt to suit, probably one of the last things I’d want it to have is the ability to exchange information.[/li][li]The backstory to the rather large (micro)chip on Niska’s shoulder. We’re told that her “father” treated her badly, but I’ve read in this thread and elsewhere that there’s a lot more to it. Perhaps it’s in the material that AMC cut, but whatever the reason, what we’re given isn’t particularly satisfactory.[/li][/ul]Despite the above, and taken as a whole, it’s been a pretty good ride so far. It’s managed to hold my attention and have me looking forward to the next installment, which at my age is a not-inconsiderable accomplishment.
Niska - wasn’t it her learning experiences of humans in the whore house that led her to current anger issues?
Showing a child the moon… hmmm, it’s ringing bells but I don’t remember where from, Some cultures do this?
Agree, Hurt was excellent. The touching relationship of two fairly broken friends, both looking back because it was all they had.
The whorehouse would definitely be a factor, but it’s my understanding that she considered meat-humans to be one level below slime mold long before she got snatched.
(As a sidenote, it’s further confirmation of Sophie’s lovability that Niska will allow her to sit in her lap.)
Niska told William Hurt that her father “sometimes didn’t treat her like a child”, implying that he’d done Adult Mode stuff with her. She said she didn’t tell the others about it. And then, her brother hid her in a whorehouse.
She’s angry and cynical because she’s basically the android equivalent of an incest survivor.
And now Niska has the power to unilaterally grant sapience to millions of Synths and massively disrupt Human civilization.
I, for one, welcome our Adult Mode overlords …
Yes, it’s all over, folks. Fast-forward millennia ahead to when the bored robots search for any frozen humans they can find, or, failing that, any frozen robots who actually lived in the time of the humans. I recommend checking out helicopters stuck in the glacial ice over Manhattan.
(The finale wasn’t earth-shattering, but it was competently done, and I do look forward to the show’s second season.)
Finally saw the S1 finale last night - I liked it. I thought certain things were left open in the right way, and certain things were closed up.
Now my question is - will we even need to see the family next season? They’re really not relevant to the story anymore.
One of the family members could suffer an accident, and the rest desperately work with the synths to have the family member “Leo-ed.”
That whole part of the situation–turning humans into immortal (maybe?) cyber-people–was barely touched on, in the first season. There’s a lot of scope for story-telling in that aspect of Humans-world.
They (probably?) have a copy of the “make synths sentient” code on that flash drive in the closet.
They do, and I doubt Prof Hobb & co are finished with them.
Well, mum is the only one who suspects Niska pulled a fast one so I suppose they’ll be in on the chase. Plus the little daughter seems to be the only one who can emotionally connect to her. Though I’d give it a good go.
I just meant that Niska may or may not have actually copied the code to the flash drive she gave them. We see that Niska surreptitiously made her own copy; maybe she decided that she wanted to have a monopoly on it.
BOOM! S2 starts at the end of the month in the UK - 8 more epi’s to add to the 8 of S1
Underrated: Humans (TV series) - Wikipedia
Great news !!! I’ve been waiting for Season 2 to start.
I don’t think we in the US get to see it until sometime next year.
And the weird thing is that this show seems to cover territory similar to HBO’s Westworld.
