This Sydney boy did his bit in voting AGAINST the Sydney Opera House, although the local press is aghast and would have people like me strung up if they could. WTF? It’s just a vaguely unusual 1960s building - I don’t dislike it, but it has never moved me, it never swells me with local pride, and it’s apparently a shit of a place to hold a performance due to acoustics and size issues. It’s just another modern building, dammit. So I’m glad it didn’t make it.

The Statue of Liberty should be out too. It’s nice enough, but not exactly a wonder.

Being a Kiwi I should vote against any Aussie inclusion at the nominee stage BUT the Opera House is more then just a vaguely unusual 1960’s building. There is NO other 60’s building that could even be in slight contention! It’s a bloody amazing building that showed how far sighted Sydney actually was (I will never admit to that! I’m a Kiwi!).

My disappointment is the giant jesus got in and Ankor Wat did not! Shame on you voters! (I didn’t vote…Shame on me!).

The problem for me is probably a blokey one (and the fact that I’m a railway loon): just across the water from the Opera House is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I was born in this city, but that bridge still gives me goosebumps. It’s huge, beautiful, metal, gravity defying, and awesome. It roars like a lion for miles around when a train passes over it. It’s amazing. Sitting next to it, is this small Opera House thingy that looks like a dessicated orange. If the bridge wan’t there, then maybe…

I totally agree with you re Ankor Wat/Christ the Redeemer.
