I’ve changed my mind. I now want a squee smiley.
What does Carol Stream add to the SDMB? :squee:
Apparently, you missed post #15.
Adding a squee (whatever that is) to the site doesn’t hurt anything or anyone.
And Carol Stream, SDMB is SERIOUS BUSINESS. Right?
Lighten up, Francis.
Did I just hear a head explode?
If you don’t even know what a squee is, how is that you have an opinion about it?
Maybe a Carol Stream smiley?
It wasn’t a “slam” just a question along the lines of why would we need a squee smiley you know.
I vote for the :squee:
Have you ever noticed that the more one word gets written, the more amusing it gets? Especially when placed in a sentence more serious than the usual company it keeps. Squee. Heh, heh.
As for myself, I do not squee, but I will defend to the death others right to squee. I’m not sure it calls for it’s own emoticon, though…
Can we get a Baba Booey smiley while we’re at it?
Hmmm…the eyes need to be bigger. And the smile needs to be wider, too. Like a toothless dolphin. Something more like tthis.
And, for the record, while I have long maintained the need for “nauseated/puking” and “fiendish devil grin” smileys, I fully endorse any efforts to ad a “Squee!” smiley as well.
You need not know what a smiley means to know that having another one isn’t really going to hurt anyone. As far as I know, they can’t get out of the computer, so you’re safe.
Moderator interveneth:
Look, gang, I understand about jokes and all, and there’s no problem with having fun. But personal insults (however amusingly expressed) are still personal insults, and not permitted outside the Pit.
I’m not issuing warnings at this point because the whole atmosphere is clearly one of “joke,” but I will issue any warnings for personal insults (regardless of “joke” quality) henceforth.
CS, it doesn’t really matter what it looks like. We’re talking about a tiny graphic someone can add to a message. It is of little consequence and isn’t going to cause the board to crumble into an adolescent cesspool.
Vote Squee!
Why not enable full, but optional, image support? That way, those who want smilies/other pictures can enjoy them, while the more austere types can opt out of having the purity of the medium spoiled with colourful pictures and the like; maybe they could be shown a link instead. I already use a firefox plugin that displays linked images inline so I don’t have to click on every link, which gets old quick especially in picture threads. Or would this cause performance issues?
I disagree. The current de minimis flavor of this board is why many of us choose to stay. If you want saccharin little icons and graphics, you can find them on thousands of other message boards.* If you can’t adequately express how hard it is to not pee your pants when you see a picture of a cat, then maybe lobbying for a squee smilie should be a bit further down your list of priorities.
*And you can tell how serious I am about this by the way I used both a latin phrase AND italicized it.
There is only one true Squee, and it is heeee. I mean He.
Actually I don’t know. Which came first? The internet Squee or JTHM?
Those are good sqeees.
A good emoticon will
[ul]
[li]Reflect a concept that people want to express,[/li][li]be well executed in a graphic sense,[/li][li]support the mission of this board, which is to fight ignorance. [/ul][/li]
Squee automatically fails on the last criteria. Hey, I like the Giraffe boards – I even like 4chan. But this ain’t them. The best internet is the one with a diversity of flora.
I dread to say this, but there are a number of workable text-based anime emoticons for those whose life lacks sufficient squee. Here they are.

What is the name of the plugin?
There’s a fourth, more important one (or maybe it’s an addendum to the first):
*communicates something that cannot be communicated in words.
Squee fails that one as well. “Squee” is a word, and it expresses exactly what it is the OP wants a smilie of. Therefore, it’s redundant. Words are good, people. Let’s use 'em.
