New sport Rat Racing

Saw on BBC breakfest news an item on a new sport (To me at any rate ) of Rat Racing.

This is racing through an urban environment where you walk, kayak, cycle, run along walls abseil off of buildings and all sorts.

This is the first new development that has excited me in a long time and I’m definitely going to have a crack at it.
Just to make my declarations,I am nothing whatsoever to do with the sport either as a participant(Though thats going to change soon) or as an organiser, sponsor or whatever.

It looks pretty awesome, I hope its as fun as it looks on the telly.

Does it intrude on the way normal people go about their lives? Just wondering- and abseiling- rule me out

I’m by no means an expert on the subject,I hadn’t even heard of it until Saturday but I believe that all aspects of it are properly supervised(especially the abseiling) and are presumably arranged to reduce any potential nuisance factor to the public.

These are properly organised events working in conjunction with the local authorities not something along the lines of "Hey kids"lets race to the other side of the city in a dead straight line.

In high school, I used to spend my time in Study Hall inventing new sports (when I wasn’t sleeping, or enjoying watching the epic confrontations between various bratty little shithead students and the six-foot-three, 88-year old World War II veteran who was the Study Hall teacher, who would inevitably hand the miscreants’ asses to them in the most humiliating way.)

One of the sports I invented was a form of rugby, except it would be played in the woods, over a stretch of two miles or so, and the teams would have about 3 times the number of men normally on the pitch at one time. It would take days to finish a game, and it would require camping out, surveillance, recon missions, sneaking, observation, and brutal hand-to-hand combat.

I hope someday it becomes a reality.

We’ve always referred to office chair racing as (cube)rat racing but what you describe sounds… like… hard.
Quick search turned up a BBC article from last season and the Rat Race site.

And here I was wondering how you got rats to run in a straight line…

just checked out the site and its looking better and better.
