New strategy for Birthers

The annexation of Hawaii was illegal and this illegality was acknowledged by the Federal government.

So Obama was born in Hawaii. The KINGDOM OF HAWAII!

What do you think?

I think they are still a bunch of nutters grasping at straws desperately hoping no one notices their real motivation is that they are actually racist bigots.

I wonder if they were inspired by the whole “Ohio is not really a state, so Taft wasn’t a true citizen, so the 16th amendment isn’t valid and so we don’t have to income tax!”
Hey, maybe if you really wanted to blow their minds, you could argue that the Louisana Purchase wasn’t truly Constitutional, and thus the whole western US isn’t really part of the nation?

I don’t get it- that looks like a non-binding Congressional admission that they annexed Hawaii by force, and an apology for doing so in such a forceful way. Then it goes on to refer to “the area that now constitutes the State of Hawaii.” Not much of an admission, if you’re looking to argue that Hawaii was never a state.

That’s… creative.

Oh, man, that’s awesome. Awesomely stupid and entertaining at the same time!

If Hawaii isn’t actually a state, Pearl Harbor, Kanehoe MCB, etc. are on sovereign Hawaiian land. Why do Birthers hate the military?

So the Japanese never actually attacked the USA!
FDR fooled us into getting into WWII!
Those Democrats have been at this for years!

I wonder if they realize that they just admitted he was born in Hawaii?

No, I think they’re saying that even if he were born in Hawaii (which, of course, he wasn’t), the point would be moot since there was never a state of that name.

I think the Birthers actually have considered trying this.

Um…Hawaii wasn’t a US state in 1941 by any reckoning, as it was admitted to the union as the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

Just so’s you know.

But it was a territory of the U.S. in 1941. If some country bombed a U.S. base on Puerto Rico, it would be an attack on the United States, even though P.R. is not one of the 50 states.

No, it wasn’t a state, but it was part of the US (a territory) and American soil. (Much like McCain wasn’t born in a state either (although I think McCain’s eligibility was more on who his parents were than where he was born, but I may have been mistaken) Come to think of it, Goldwater wasn’t either.) Therefore, the Japanese attacked American soil, even if it wasn’t one of the 48.

t-bonham’s point is that if the annexation of Hawaii was illegal, then the Japanese didn’t even attack American soil, state, territory, what have you. They just attacked the Kingdom of Hawaii.

EDIT: Or what Giles said.

You’ll never understand the Birther mindset if you employ thinking. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them are using this argument. I am pretty sure I have seen a few people claim he’s not a citizen because Hawaii wasn’t a state when he was born even though it’s easy to check that Hawaii became a state in 1959 and Obama was born in 1961. I think even the Birthers acknowledge the year and date of his birth are accurate, although I guess they don’t have to. If this doesn’t pan out maybe they’ll say his birth certificate was doctored to make him look older, and that he’s really 34 and too young to be president.

By the way, this article says the state of Hawaii still gets 10 or 20 requests for his birth certificate every week.

I think the Birthers would have much more success if they shifted their strategy to questioning the voting machines used in 2008.

Wasn’t Governor Ah-nold, at one time, pushing for an amendment to the Constitution that would overturn the “natural born citizen” requirement for being President? Part of me wants to see that happen, just to see how the birthers would react.

I think it’s suspicious that nobody’s ever seen Hawaii’s birth certificate. So how do we know it’s an American state?

Never mind the birth certificate. Has anyone even seen Hawaii? Can we be sure that those “islands” in the middle of the Pacific Ocean aren’t an Obama-administration conspiracy?

Google Maps only recently mapped out Oahu’s street views. The timing is highly suspicious.

That pretty much stopped when Democrats offered to support it, as long as it also removed the 2-term limit. Because polls showed that Bill Clinton (or maybe Bill with Hilary Clinton as VP) would beat all of the current Republican candidates. Republicans were not willing to take that on.

Well, I’ve seen Hawaii. I have degrees from UH Manoa. At least, I think it was Hawaii. I could’ve been living somewhere else for 6 years and, along with everyone else there, was the subject of a devious misnaming conspiracy.

Funny thing about Hawaii-as-a-state: you’d be surprised how many tourists ask if their U.S. money is any good (or where to exchange it). :smack:
