I’ve noticed gobs of thread across many forae regarding yesterday’s events. While some are definately GQ, the GD, IMHO and MPSIMS threads have many similarities; there seems to be quite a bit of redundancy of OPs. It is possible, or even reasonable, to generate a new forum dedicated to the events, and move all threads there?
This might keep the number of threads to a smaller number, as a potential thread starter might see that his/her thread idea has already been begun. As it stands, I can’t keep up with all of the threads and the ideas therein. After discussion dies down (whenever that may be) the forum can be deleted and any “active” threads can be reapportioned to appropriate forae? I’ve participated in a few threads but am getting a bit lost in the sea of titles, etc.
If this is a stupid idea, you can send someone out to pimp-slap me.
We have, in the past, tossed around the idea of a “Current Events” forum, but decided against it. I believe that the last time it came up was all the discussions of the election.
Because, let’s face it, it won’t stay serious for long. Right next to the WTC threads and the election threads and the Chandra Levy “did he or didn’t he?” threads will be the moon landing hoax threads, and the “new findings on circumcision” threads, and the Lord of the Rings movie threads, and the upcoming Star Wars Episode-whatever-it-is-how’s-a-person-sposed-to-keep-the-dang-things-STRAIGHT threads…
While current events are very important, the way people deal with them and discuss them can be very different. That’s one of the reasons we have all the varied forums we do in the first place, so that all the facets can be handled as you, our users, see fit.
Putting all those varied threads in one common forum just because they share common facts and origins sort of defeats the purpose of having different forums in the first place. And it also creates more housework headaches for us: who moderates it? How do we handle it when the issue(s) fall off the public radar screen and y’all are tired of it, do we close the forum? Delete it? What? And what constitutes a big enough topic for a forum of its own?
It’s just more than it’s worth and we think would be less useful for you rather than more.
Thanks, Tuba. I appreciate the explanation. Of course, I’ll be keeping a look-out for anyone in a white suit and shoes wearing lots of chains walking towards me in a fur coat with a feathered hat. I don’t really wanna be pipm-slapped.
Well, for most things, this should be pretty obvious. But, I’d say a rule of thumb of more than 5 threads on the home page of a forum is a good measure to find out what’s “big enough.”
