This is my favorite one of all. I mean, technically, Trump formally surrendered to the Taliban in Afghanistan in February 2020, so maybe you’re saying we weren’t at war because of that surrender? But he kept troops in Afghanistan until he left office. But there were the highest number of US military deaths in 2020 of any time since 2013 that year. Anyway we managed to launch airstrikes in Iraq AND kill civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, and Syria in the previous year. [cite]
Oh, and even if we’re willing to set aside 2020 (i.e., exactly “four years ago”), due to COVID causing extreme data:
- US gross domestic product, 2019 (i.e., the last full non-COVID year with Trump as president): $21.38 trillion
- US gross domestic product, 2023: $27.36 trillion
In other words, the economy’s grown by 28% in the past four years.
Until Trump, Republican policy was pro-business, anti-domestic intervention, and a strong foreign policy. The opposites - pro-union/worker protectionism, weak foreign policy - was Democratic.
Trump started the Trade War. That means that instead of well paid Americans managing cheap foreign labor to make stuff for Americans to purchase on the cheap from cheap foreign materials, we now have expensive Americans managing expensive Americans to make stuff from expensive American materials.
Inflation from increased supply chain costs started with Trump and, likely, you voted for it. And Biden has kept it up because he’s a pro-Union Democrat from the Union belt that Trump won over by selling those folk on Democratic style, pro-union, worker protectionist policy.
And now, I can’t read the minds of Putin, Netanyahu, nor the leaders of Hamas. I don’t know why they started their wars but, under Trump, we drew down and told the world as many times as possible that we didn’t care about trying to maintain peace and the ability to trade feel, deal freely, etc. across the world. That was massively beneficial to the interests of foreign powers. When the 800 pound monkey says, “Someone else take over. You can be the 800 pound monkey and I’ll take my turn as your bitch.” Well, that seems like a pretty good call to arms for anyone else on the planet ready to take up that mantle.

Much ink has been spilled about MAGA dudes, but I see one big point of continuity with the old Republican base. Today’s MAGA dudes like to troll online, but like old schoolers, they love their cheerleading.
I mean Jim clearly doesn’t care about war, the economy, unemployment, failing businesses, supply shortages, or crime. For Jim, these aren’t terms that refer to measurable entities: they are cheers. Go Team go, inflation is low, etc.
You had a similar thing going on during the 2 Iraq wars. “Support our troops!”, wasn’t advocating anything specific (after all, Democrats have showed far more concern about agent orange, health effects of depleated uranium armor, etc). It was a cheer aimed at the opposing team. Republicans have always liked that kind of thing.
Sometimes this is literal. George W Bush, Thad Cochran, Trent Lott, Rick Perry, and Ronald Reagan were all cheerleaders in college.

Trump is threatening to “not give one penny” to schools or colleges that mandate the Covid-19 vaccine. He is accusing Kennedy of being a “fake” anti-vaxxer. And he is rarely mentioning what he once touted as “one of the greatest miracles” of his presidency — his program to speed development of the vaccine.
