New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Heh, I got the D.E.H.T.A.'s little P.I.T.A. achievement the other day. Surprisingly easy when you can fly around.

Done and done. Now just to level him up to the point where I can get into random dungeons with him.

Sat out for most of the raid last night to give the other Prot War a chance to get in–good thing, too, since I apparently just missed out on a bunch of wipes. I’d specifically asked to get back in for H-BQL, who ended up being the last boss of the night. That would have been a one-shot, but we had to wipe it when the DK working on our next Shadowmourne died after getting the buffs he needed for the quest (so he could start over). Stupid bitch declined to drop her shield yet again, of course–it was the caster neck for approximately the billionth time. (And I was the only main-spec tank in the raid for that boss who could use a shield, too.)

I’m mildly crossing my fingers that the raid won’t get to Sindri until Monday–I’d really like a shot at the trinket she drops.

How were you guys trying to do it? When we did it on 25 a hojillion years ago (before Ulduar was even out), we deliberately pulled all of the aboms from their niches.

It never ceases to amaze me how much easier everything is when you can just hop over the terrain (and mobs) in the middle.

<3

That’s how we did it. The problems were that one, the tanks were overconfident and kept yanking like three niches at a time, and two, even when the tanks slowed down, the ranged DPS weren’t taking down Soul Weavers quickly enough, so they would get to the center ring and start knocking everyone around. We got to phase 2 once, but my and the other healer’s mana were so wiped from phase 1 that we couldn’t keep up with the healing needs.

If we’d had two more people, maybe even one more person, we could have done it. But trying to do that with 8 people was simply too overwhelming.

I can only imagine, yeah.

I have trouble with some of the names too – but I supposed I can’t complain too much, since I have a Gnome warrior named Gnocchi.

Shouldn’t that be Gnomecchi? :stuck_out_tongue:

Gnomes are kind of different on the naming thing, anyway. Their NPC names are kind of silly already, so I have no problem naming them “cute”. Binky, Winky, Gneechie, Droogie, etc.

Just a question here: is anyone else using a USB headset with Ventrillo? And if so, are there any special issues that need to be addressed?

I rented a Vent server a couple of weeks ago for a friend and I to use when we’re playing together (we got tired of the Blizzard Party Chat not working about 25% of the time, plus you can’t use it when you’re in an inter-realm PUG). It’s been fine, but his headset broke yesterday. He grabbed his son’s headset, which turned out to be a USB headset, rather than one that plugged into the sound jacks on the computer.

For some reason, with his son’s headset, he couldn’t talk on Vent. He could connect to the server just fine, but couldn’t talk. We tried the WoW party chat, and that was working (for a change), so we used that instead.

I can’t believe that Vent cares what sort of headset you’re using, but my knowledge of Vent is very limited, so I was wondering if anyone else knew of any USB/non-USB headset issues. I’m going to be going over there on Saturday anyway, so we figured we’d spend a little time troubleshooting.

Your friend probably just needs to tweak the settings and/or restart the application. His Vent client is expecting the input/output to be routed thru the mic/speaker jacks, but now it needs to pull from a USB port. IIRC, I’ve had issues even going between a headset and speakers.

The thing about USB headphones is that they have to have their own internal sound device, because they don’t connect through the soundcard or the motherboard’s sound device. Windows has to be pointed at a particular sound device in order for programs to use it. If you have the USB headphones plugged in, but Windows is looking at the sound card, it won’t pick up anything from the headphones.

Either look at the sound device settings in Windows or check the Vent setup. One or both should be accessing the headphones, for input at least if not output. If they are looking at the headphones for input and the mic still won’t work with Vent…well, you got me.

Or what Guns said is probably easier. USB may be plug-and-play, but a lot of programs can’t adjust on the fly.

Regarding the RP and weird names thing, I’m a chick who only has male toons, and I’ve slipped up on a few occasions and said things that indicate I’m female. I’m not on any RP servers though.

No problem with that, as long as you don’t mind people knowing you’re a woman. When I’m on my male toon, I’ll still refer to myself as female (even if I refer to the *character *as “he”). When talking about male guildies playing female toons, too, we always refer to them as “he” (again, unless specifically talking about the character).

Ding to 78, and I’m now wearing a full set of Savage Saronite. Of course I am away visiting family this weekend, so no levelling to 80 for me till next week. Should have achieved 80 within 10 days /played, or maybe just over. How far off the trend is that?

Grats! No idea how long is usual to get to 80.

Gnomeregan rep grind is a pain. That is all.

up to 2.5K GS (full set Savage Saronite). Is my way forwards now basically frost emblem purchases in Dalaran until I’m good for Heroic, then Triumph purchases? What is a decent GS for Heroic? What are the optimum stats for a prot warr tank before hitting caps?

Triumph, then Frost. You get Triumph way faster. I’d say 4k GS is nice but will take a little time obviously, and a prot warrior’s immediate concern is you absolutely must get 535 defense to tank a heroic. (540 for raids.) Then stamina out the wazoo, and I’ll let others chime in from here.

Where do you get Triumph emblems? It is Frost that I get for my random dungeon each day right?

No, you get Triumphs for the daily random normal dungeon, the first random heroic dungeon each day award 2 Frosts, each random heroic after that will award 2 Triumphs as well as one Triumph per heroic dungeon boss you kill.
