New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

I answered this last page. You need 535 defense, which you get by collecting about 689 defense rating.

Like you said there: confusing ;p

Thanks

Help! What’s the best way to get to Netherstorm (never been there)?

I’m 350 skinning and that’s my next place to find animals to kill and skin.

We were in Nagrand and I flew Silka over the Blade Edge Mountains onto Netherstorm and tried to find Area 52, so I could land and get the lay of the, uh, land, as it were, but NEVER found it, so we wound up in that Harborage place where I clicked on a new flight path HOPING it would take me back to Hellfire, but no go. Never had been to the Harborage so I couldn’t go anywhere else.

So to keep from killing poor Silka (she was gasping with every beat of her wings, because the blades on that mountain were so high), we just hearthed out of there back to Valiance Keep.

I WOULD like to continue skinning, but Netherstorm is such a bitch to get to (for me [to poop on!] anyway). So I am hoping y’all can set me straight before I kill our poor mount (they DO get tired, ah reckon!)!

Thanks

Hi Q

You’ll need to get one of the connecting flight points from Harborage to HP - it’s probably Telredor you are missing, this is in Zangarmarsh South East of Orebor Harborage. If you take a screenshot of your flight points I can tell you for sure.

To find Area 52 looking at this map Outland Map you can see it is in the South West of Netherstorm (big red dot). You don’t have to land in Area 52 though - just pick a spot clear of mobs and land there to do your killing and skinning.

I don’t know, but that’s the instance where I was informed that “healing doesn’t cause aggro.” Sure, honey, and you’ve been healing for about as long as that moron who’s ignored all the walking-about mobs and just managed to pull two whole groups while your healing tail pulled two others has been tanking… :smack:

One interesting thing about multi-server PUGs is that people from different servers seem to approach certain things differently; it’s like the WoW version of cultural differences. My server is the only RPG one in the battlegroup; our tanks tend to start slowest and speed up once they see that people are doing ok and most of our players address people by their names or an abbreviation (they may even ask “Izwonafultnk, is it acceptable if I call you Iz?”). There is another server whose tanks go ahead without waiting for buffs (and the DPS may go ahead without waiting for the tank, too, yippi-yi-yay), and another whose people are the most likely to address people by their class, leading to situations like “which of the three other pallies do you mean when you say ‘pally’, Shinybubble?”

Does anybody know why is it always morons who say “this is my third 80” like it was some measure of their intelligence or authority? I’m working on my [number deleted], but I take it as a sign of my moving every year or so and never bothering making a “local” life, not of my IQ.

Hey, I’d say I got one of those tanks yesterday, but I think he rushed ahead to keep us from noticing his spec/gear and bailing. I randomed into HFoS and as soon as I saw the rest of the group, the DK tank ran around the corner and attacked one of the two giant skeletons there. I started buffing (was on my shadow priest) and immediately got buff aggro from the other skeleton, which I had to shield/fade off because the tank wasn’t picking it up. I notice that the tank has a permanent, named ghoul pet - unholy spec tank? I checked his gear with /gearscore - he wasn’t Defense-capped and was indeed unholy. The tank is beginning to run to the next group, when the healer complains about a DPS trying to instaqueue as a tank, and drops group, I was typing in a complaint as well and followed suit.

I plead guilty to this, but I try to only do it in cases where there’s only one of the class around. (Sometimes I use people’s names, but sometimes in the heat of battle the class is the first thing that springs to mind, as the other day in a mostly-guild group where the healer went down, i started backup-healing with my paladin and then died, and said “shammy, plz heal the tank”.)

Only had time for a quick heroic yesterday on my priest, ended up with a DK tank who must have been new running with two of his guildies and another pug. I’ve complained about this before, but By God undergeared DKs can drop from 30k hit points to zero faster than I can cast a flash heal. He held aggro pretty well but on the pull I would toss him a shield, guardian, PoM, renew, and he’d already be close to dead. We wiped once on Krik (dps didn’t run out of poison nova) and three times on the ramp and once in the tunnel before one of his friends went and got his pally tank – after that it was really easy.

On the whole Heroics thing

Should I go as DPS first? What sort of GS is needed to Tank, is it just a case of having hit the defence cap? Is level 80 a req for starting heroics or should I be randoming now (at level l78)?

Depends on what you’re better geared for. The defense cap is pretty much the primary requirement; after that, you just need to have good enough gear that you’re able to take some hits and keep your threat up. If you have a decent DPS spec and gear, I’d go in as that until you’re comfortable with the heroics to try them yourself, as well as picking up as much tank gear as you can.

You can’t start doing heroics until 80, but you can run normal dungeons, and I would suggest doing that at least once a day for the 2 Emblems of Triumph, which will give you a headstart on getting good gear.

Already on that. Where in Dalaran do you go to spend these things? I want to go have a look see and start building up a shopping list so I know how many i need to save for that 1st piece.

Is heirloom gear purchased through emblems or gold? Where is this purchased also?

There is a group of vendors in your faction’s part of Dalaran named Emblem of <whatever> Quartermaster, which is where you can buy most gear. The specific armor shops around Dalaran also sell badge gear. The primary use of Triumph emblems is Tier 9 gear, which can be purchased off vendors at the Argent Tournament. Heirlooms are bought off the Emblem of Heroism vendor for 40 badges apiece, and you need to exchange your Triumphs for Heroisms down in the sewer inn. You can also participate in the Argent Tournament dailies and buy heirlooms there, provided you’re exalted with the tournament factions, for 60 Champion’s Seals each.

I believe you can now buy T9 in Dalaran as well as at the Argent Tournament grounds.

Also, if you search WowWiki for “Emblems of Triumph”, you’ll get a listing of everything available - I think you have to click through “Tier 9” to see the Tier 9 gear (which is class-specific), but it’ll still be everything on 2 pages or so.

What’s your class again?

If you wear plate, you can buy tier pieces at Tanks For Everything, which is at the northern end of the Magus Commerce district - it’s got the big, stained-glass window shaped like an axe. If you’re Alliance, talk to the dwarf; if you’re Horde, talk to the left-hand human behind the counter.

I’m not sure where druids by their leather tanking gear.

The above is for tier pieces. You can spend your Triumphs and Frosts on alternative gear at the locations listed below.

Emblems of various sorts. You can spend, I think, Emblems of Conquest (you’ll have to downgrade your Triumphs) and buy Heirlooms at The Silver Enclave (Alliance, up the stairs to the right of the entrance) or Sunreaver’s Sanctuary (Horde). Alternatively, you can do dailies at the Argent Tournament to earn Champion’s Seals, and once you’ve earned the Crusader title you can use the Seals to purchase heirlooms from the Crusader Quartermaster there.
Weekends and random heroics: I’m discovering there is a huge difference between running randoms on Friday-Saturday, and running randoms on Sunday. Fridays and Saturdays seem to bring out all the extremely casual players, and/or those who only play on the weekend. The result is lots of people who just don’t seem to know what they’re doing, and I end up in groups that wipe over and over an over, even on trash pulls. But then on Sundays I seem to end up grouped with well-geared, competent players and we just blow through the instances.

The name thing: Last night I spotted a hunter/pet name combination that made me laugh out loud at the cleverness: the hunter’s name was Ikiteu, and the pet’s name was Ibiteu. Punny names that still look like real names

Jerks: Level 80 DK had his mammoth parked on top of the Stormwind AH mailbox for quite some time last night. I hit him with Baby Spice a couple times, but that really doesn’t do much good when the recipient can just immediately right-click it off. I was in the process of reporting him when he finally moved. I think somebody must have complained to his guild, because once he was gone I spotted a level 1 bank alt from the same guild standing next to the mailbox. Or maybe he was just getting out of his guildmate’s way (or maybe it was his guild leader’s bank alt).

Boomkins: Are all their spells really short-range, or something? All the boomkins I get grouped with seem to want to stand practically right on top of the scrum.

Say what? Where are these vendors hiding at the Tournament? I’ve spent a whole lot of time there on various toons, and have never run across a Triumph gear vendor (but plenty of vendors who will take my Champion’s Seals).

East wing of the main tournament building, the one between the Horde and Alliance tents. There’s a few vendors under the awnings that sell the T9 pieces, the class-specific gear that has heroes’ names prefixed on them (paladins have Kuralyon’s or Liadrin’s gear, forex).

The T9 vendors are along the walkway leading to the Trial of the Crusader entrance. Horde on the right, Alliance on the left. They only sell T9, though–not the other Triumph gear.

A patch or two ago, they made it so you can buy T9 in Dalaran too–before that you could only buy it from the vendors at the Tournament grounds.

Thanks - I’ve utterly failed to notice them. Are they inside or something? I see lots of non-interactive NPC Valiants of various races sitting on benches and at tables around there, but just hadn’t noticed any vendors.

I guess the vendors in Dalaran started selling T9 before I ever started running heroics, so for me they’ve “always” been there and it didn’t occur to me to look elsewhere.
