New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Pre-4.0, my leveling shadowpriests always stacked “of the Whale” gear. Spirit partially translated to spellpower, and spirit tap doubled your spirit for mana regen. I was nigh unstoppable both solo questing and in PvP (until warriors got bladestorm, anyway).

ETA: Plus they were super cheap, whereas “of the Eagle” was super inflated.

That’s when you know you’re awesome.

Looks like there’s been a great change for frost mages. My elemental respawns with me in BGs, so no more getting stuck without a pet between cooldowns.

However, there is manifest injustice in the world of Azeroth. Warlock demons get unique names. My elemental does not. Blatant discrimination. Think I gonna lead a protest march or something. Or not. But it sucks.

I don’t know if it is something new, or specific to the Warrior, but now his shortcut bars light up all the time for overpower and execute. I mean they sparkle like crazy to let me know they are available. I haven’t seen it on any other toons with skills that depend on other conditions.

No, spending every moment looking at a fel hunter named Flaaghuhn is annoying.

I saw it once on my Hunter, but it came on just as the battle ended and went away before the next mob, so I have no idea what was up with that.

My pally’s Templar’s Verdict, Exorcism, and Hammer of Wrath light up when appropriate.

Same with my hunter (Kill Command, Focus Fire), and my frost mage (Fingers of Frost proc lights Deep Freeze + Ice Lance, Brain Freeze activating lights up Frostfire and Fireball). Looks like Blizzard has another way to notify you of procs/skills becoming active.

You still mad SFG owned you in your pvp tantrum last week? Another pro-SFG here. Nothing wrong with her wall o text if it contains useful information.

Has Blizzard made the game too easy in order to retain customers? I’ve only played hunter and cannot comment on other classes, but now, even when facing mobs 6-8 levels above me, an arcane shot, serpent sting and a kill command or two is all it takes to win. Against even or lower level mobs, I just send my pet in and use KC (seems to have a high crit proc rate) and only shoot at the mob once only to get credit for the kill and loot. Does Blizzard figure it’s nothing but a race to the end-game and they want to appease the masses? I enjoy every aspect of leveling and have become a bit disheartened by the ease. That and including, among other things, infinite ammo, the game seems unchallenging. The biggest difficulty is confronting multiple mobs, which is handled fairly easily with FD and Freezing Trap. I’ve only died 22 times at level 58, and 9 of those deaths occurred while running through Og (as alliance) to get the RFC achievement. I think Blizzard ruined the game with the last patch and pushed me back to EverQuest; which is the superior game anyway.

^ I seem to recall hearing some like that before the other two expansions, and occasionally after a major patch/changes. Bliz will rebalance shortly, and with the new expansion we’ll have hard content again.

I’ve heard that complaint with most MMORPGs, including EQ. It happens. From everything I’ve heard, Cataclysm dungeons are taking us back to vanilla/BC where you actually had to use CC and strategy rather than turning it into an AOE fest.

I’ve reported people with similar behaviors a couple of times for “smells like that title should be in Chinese”; one of them got wiped (not banned, wiped) before we were even out of the instance, but it was over two years ago (that one time my rogue ended up tanking, being healed by a shadowpriest, and the other three people in the party were another spriest and two mages… it was fun!)

I like the new “glow when special is active” buttons.

For my hunter, SV seems to run out of focus relatively fast, MM doesn’t have that problem. Anybody else have a similar experience, tips other than “go read elitisterks”?

I couldn’t disagree more with this post. **Shot from Guns **has always added some useful info to the respones that I have gotten before she has a chance to write. Also, this is not really a very classy way of asking **SFG **to cool it, even if you had a good point.

Everyone, I will take this chance to say that I very much appreciate every person who has taken the time to answer my questions and set me straight about my very stupid mistakes.

My MM build has adequate focus when I’m careful with the rotation. And if I’m careful with the rotation, my single-target DPS goes up to close to what it was pre-4.0, if the fight goes long enough. OTOH, if I’m not paying attention, I run out of focus damn near instantly, because I revert to spamming whatever comes off of cooldown, a la release 3.x. And since Arcane Shot doesn’t have a cooldown, I spastically pump that button until I’m OOF. And then cuss a lot.

I have a lot of practicing to do.

OTOH, in my BM build (oriented towards pet tank survival, for soloing stuff), it’s harder to run out of focus except in “Oh shit” situations. The 10 extra focus is good. The focus regen stuff from the pet is good. But if the situation gets completely sideways, I have to temporize like mad–Deterrence, FD, the like.

And frankly, losing Volley is a crippling liability for soloing instances. Even massively improved, Multishot is a poor substitute, since you can’t bomb a crowd of mobs meleeing you. Traps are very poor AoE dps for the focus cost. Ultimately, you’re stuck kiting, and with the focus cost of Multishot makes that a dubious proposition.

This isn’t a major patch/change; this redesigned the whole game.

Yeah, it’s pretty much WoW 2.0. Or will be when the full expansion arrives.

Still, balancing has been a never-ending problem for all MMOs. You can never achieve perfect balance, and even if you could that would only lead to stagnation. So instead classes are redesigned and tweaked such that these three may be the top DPS and those four are lagging, then tweaked again so a different two specs are OP. Adjustments are always being made.

It’s also worth noting that the game has been rebalanced around level 85. They don’t really care how things work at 80 now. The lower levels have also been balanced around the new items and quests that will come with Cataclysm. The old items have been shoehorned into the new formulas and algorithms, and as a result they’re not going to work quite right. Better that they work too well than not well enough.

There was no tantrum, nor was there any “owning”. She took one position, I took another. Neither is demonstrably correct, as the subject is a matter of opinion.

Does anyone know if Blizzard (again) updated the amount of XP you get for completing quests at the lower levels?

A friend of mine and I play together on Wednesday nights. Last night was the first time we’d gotten to play since the patch, we went from just a bar or so into level 50 to more than half-way through level 51 in a little under 2 hours of playtime.

All we did were the Searing Gorge quests, and there were at least two trips back to Ironforge during that 2 hours. It just seemed as though we were getting XP at a ferocious rate.

They must have. Before, just before leaving the newb area (night elf) I’d be level 5 plus halfway to 6 after doing all the quests and necessary killing. That was when you had to kill all the spiders to get the egg. Now, you don’t have to kill spiders to get the egg and I still attain level 5 plus halfway to 6 after doing all the quests plus (only) the necessary killing. Since the only way to attain XP at that level is killing and quests, and considering that I have the same XP with less killing, I must conclude that they raised the quest XP at newb level.
