New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Still useful on trash pulls. My mage can do 3K+ dps overall, all the way through a heroic, in either fire or frost spec, without working up a sweat. On bosses, depending on latency, I can hit as high as 5K or so. I put a point or two into the talent that adds a slow to Blizzard, so even if I pull aggro briefly, the mob probably won’t reach me.

The druid is doing around 1.5 K overall in non-heroics, with Hurricane and Starfall. He does tend to pull aggro more often than I’d like, but with Typhoon, I just knock the mob back to the tank.

What one should keep in mind when discussing the Wrath dungeon difficulty is that the original Wrath heroics were designed for ilvl 187 blues, once you were wearing ilvl 200 epics you were already outgearing them.
They’re not quite the mindless aoe fests we’ve gotten used to when the entire party is mostly wearing ilvl 187(or worse) blues. (Of course they never got close to the BC heroics but most of those were over the top in the other direction.)

I need to work my female DK (“Sugrfoot”)…

Q

Will getting the rest of my T10 set boost my DPS? I’m only at 2/5 right now. I’m doing around 2k dps, depends on the group I’m in.

Depends on what you’re wearing now. Probably. The four-piece bonuses are still good for just about everybody, I think.

Heh. My warrior just finished Heroic Old Kingdom (“Oh yay,” I said, “I get this for my first heroic on this toon…”) with quite a few pieces “or worse” than 187, and only died once, on Jedoga. Of course, it helped that the healer was a “Kingslayer” - he did a good job of keeping us alive. I was in there with a warrior tank who only hit 80 three days before me

My warrior’s first JP purchase is going to be the T10 shoulders, since I wasn’t able to find anything (well, in my price range, anyway) on the AH to replace the heirloom shoulders she’s wearing. As with my mage, I want to avoid doing what my paladin did anyway (spent craploads of gold on gear from the AH).

I don’t even remember the last time I bought gear on the AH. Definitely haven’t done it since rejoining the game last Summer. It’s so easy to get a full set of level 80 purples, especially if you don’t mind mingling PVE and PVP gear at the start.

If you have any Honor Points, check out some of the PvP gear, Rik. It’s not perfectly itemized for PvE but for a pretty meager amount of honor you can get some pretty sure upgrades. Even my T10/ICC-geared priest upgraded with a new wand and off-hand item. Even one BG win might be enough for an upgrade, depending on what you have now.

I have 517 HP now. Where can I get decent gear for my Ally Warrior? Also how do I find what my DPS rating is?

And for latency I found this, y’all: http://www.threadmeters.com/rtxFig/Can_Not_Find_A_Realm_With_A_Good_Latency/

Mine is 147 ms. I guess that’s good? How does one find per centage of lag, though?

Thanks

Q

Yeah…I bought the Wrathful staff for my mage. Stats aren’t optimal, but it was about a 200+ increase in spell power, and I’m still hit capped.

Quasi–there are venders for PVP gear in Stormwind (think it’s called the Hall of Champions–is in Old Town) or in the Sewers of Dal (goblins in the shack at one end of the arena). You probably have enough honor to get one piece of PVP gear, from the tier right below Wrathful…think the item level will be about 232. Think a full set of that gear costs around 3K honor now.

Lag isn’t a percentage–it’s a measure of how long it takes your client to communicate with the server. 147 ms means that it takes 147/1000 of a second for your computer to talk to the server and get a response. But that number can go up or down depending on how much information is going back and forth between you and the server, how many other people are trying to exchange information, the exactly location of the server you’re talking to, etc.

I looked in WoW abbreviations, but didn’t find HP (can it stand for something other than honor points?). About the damage per second rating? Is it somewhere in my stats and how is IT measured?

Thanks

Q

HP could, in theory, be used to abbreviate Hit Points in some conversations about various games. On your currency tab, it means honor points.

Damage per second is usually measured with an addon, like Recount or Skada. I prefer Recount, but some people love Skada.

HP can also be “Hit points” or “Health points”. Basically the amount of health your character has. You should see it on the main character information screen.

You can determine your DPS by installing an add-on that monitors it (Recount and Skada being the main ones). You can then test your DPS by hitting a test dummy in a capital city, or have it running while you do a dungeon or something. There is no real way to know what your DPS is without measuring it, because it depends both on your gear and your ability to use the correct actions at the correct time.

Thanks Jas09, Oakie and SFG.

Can someone else see my DPS anywhere? I just looked at my achievements (very long list, btw - much of it with no figures, lots of heals, lots of deaths), and compared to what some of y’all’s probably look like, it must look pretty crappy. I know the armory shows some stuff like my gear, but the stuff on my achievements page is my eyes only, right?

Thanks

Q

Does Skada record DPS on NPC’s? Because if it does, I was unable to see it even though I chose it from the menu.

Also I am STILL seeing that message in red telling me I have global errors on everything in my adds (except what I disabled/uninstalled). The message says report it as a bug and I tried but couldn’t find “ALL” or send it. All it let me do was highlight by left clicking.

And Oakie We went to the Hall of Champions, and you were right, there’s really not much we can afford right now.

Thanks

Q

Indeed, but you may (or may not) recall that I strenuously avoided dungeons for a very long time, mainly because I just wasn’t interested in grouping with other people. My paladin hit level 80 in June of 09, but never ran a single NR dungeon until February of this year … and that was me and another level 80 ret pally 2-manning our way through normal UK and DTK. Then toward the end of March, some other friends I met in-game finally badgered me into running dungeons with them. But up until then, if I wanted to upgrade my gear I had to buy it off the AH. It’s why even now that she’s done all the heroics numerous times, she has only one piece of T10 - she was already wearing AH-purchased iLvl 245 or 264 pieces in the relevant slots, so the iLvl 251 T10 stuff was all either a downgrade or only a marginal upgrade. For example, she had the crafted iLvl 245 Titanium Razorplate chest piece, so rather than make the marginal jump to the T10 chest, she went for the offset iLvl 264 chest instead. Whereas if she’d started running dungeons as soon as she hit 80, she could have gone right for the T9 gear, and then eventually the T10 when it came out (and saved several thousand gold in the process). But since she’d spent so much gold on armor, she didn’t want to ditch it simply to go from iLvl 245 to 251.

I also noticed that the iLvl 264 off-set, Frost-purchaseable chest, gloves, and belt were perfectly matched, visually, with the iLvl 264 Raging Behemoth’s Shoulderplates she’d paid an obscene amount of gold for and had no intention of replacing any time soon. I figured that, since even T9 gear is overkill for heroics and I still had no intention of raiding, I’d go for aesthetics and finish gearing her up with stuff that visually matched what she already had, and so that meant finishing things off by paying even more mountains of gold for the iLvl 264 crafted pants and boots, which also happened to match. She did make the small 245->251 upgrade in the helm department, though, but again purely for aesthetic reasons. That iLvl 245 T9-style off-set helm looked completely out of place with the rest of her kit:

while the T10 helm fit right in:

My love for aesthetics is such that I even redesigned my guild tabard with a color scheme that compliments both the colors of that armor and my paladin’s red hair

Now, in the weapon department … her weapon is now her “weakest” piece of gear, being the iLvl 232 Tyrannical Beheader that Tyrannus drops in Heroic PoS. Unfortunately, it’s reportedly the best 2h PvE weapon available outside of a raid. So I’ve been looking at the iLvl 264 Wrathful 2-hand PvP weapons, which cost 2550 Honor Points. The Wrathful Gladiator’s Greatsword, in particular. In any case I’d rather this particular toon was using a sword than an axe.

Now, my mage was a different story. She hit level 80 in May of this year, by which time I’d already become familiar and comfortable with NR heroics, so she jumped in feet first and got herself right into T9, and now T10. And so that’s the route I’m going with my warrior, though now with both T9 and T10 costing Justice Points instead of two different kinds of badges, she’ll skip the T9. Give her a week and she’ll have that first piece of T10, and hopefully a few upgrades in other slots from drops. She already has new boots.

Haven’t PvP’d at all on my warrior. I’ll probably do so eventually

Has anyone taken a look at the upgrades to the armory? It makes my Warrior look pretty mean (even moreso when I remember to log out in my tanking gear). Plus for hunters it shows all of your pets, complete with an image, not just the ones you have active. My Hunter has 14 pets and counting, hoping to add two more spirit beasts to the collection. I’m going to need another 20 stable slots by the time Cataclysm rolls out.

My ICC10 group got their LK kill this past Tuesday, after three months of hard work. I feel bad for our main tank who wasn’t there for the kill, for whatever reason he couldn’t log onto WoW so we grabbed another tank from the guild and took ol’ Lichy down after 3 attempts. Then his girlfriend, who was our raid leader, called to tell him during the cinematic and he hung up on her. So we’re clearing again this week to get him that kill.

Just caught an auctioneer mistake. Went to Deadmines to collect some more cloth for my First Aid skill. When I looked I had a stack of 20 and a stack of 17 linen cloths. Auctioneer had the simple auction price at 2317 g, so I sent both to Double L to auction for me. I was disappointed that folks were selling their stacks for not more than single digit gold. I guess I’ll join a run in that jail they have in SW and get some more.

Thanks

Quasi, if you’re talking about the dungeon instance in Stormwind, you can solo it easily on your 80. I doubt anything in there can actually hit you.

Also, you asked if other people can see your dps. Yes, they can, if they are grouped with you or in a raid with you, and running either Recount or Skada. However, DPS only matters for PVE considerations. PVP is all about burst damage. Hit the other guy as hard as you can as fast as you can, and hope he dies before you do.
