New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Interesting…

WoW is down today, and at the same time I am suddenly getting the lightning-fast Internet that I expect from my fancy-schmancy 6-gigabit fiber optic connection. I just went through my list of webcomics, and every one of them loaded almost instantaneously. Several other sites that normally load slowly also loaded almost instantaneously.

Could WoW really be slowing down the whole Internet all by itself?

Poor sportsmanship and griefing douchbaggery comes in many forms, and multiboxing can be a powerful enabler. I can see that perspective. But there are others, perhaps more powerful ones. PvP is inherently unfair, if done right. (Strike first, never give up initiative, counter every attack. Stun, kite, delay, deflect. Bubble and heal. Or spam HoTs and instant-casts.)

PvP and sportsmanship have only a passing acquaintance.

That last line is so wrong it make my heart ache.

The sentiment you reference is how I feel about non-battleground PvP. Of course, I’m a carebear who’d rather cooperate with Alliance toons than kill them, and I suck at PvP as well, so who am I to complain, I guess.

Except that Nelf rogue who killed me on the dock waiting for the ship to Azuremyst while I was trying to do Pilgrim’s Peril last night. Made me miss my damn boat! Her I’d like to drop a house on…

I was on my 80 pally killing turkeys in Tirisfal last night when I came across a level 42 night elf rogue. He was flagged; I wasn’t. Easy pickings. When he saw me he froze for a second, then stealthed … but I could still see him. Then he unstealthed and stood in front of me.

Ehh… I just /saluted and went on my way. I was feeling benevolent I guess.

How long are the invasions going to go on now that the Shattering has happened?

ETA: Or will happen, when the servers come up. Are they phasing it so everybody gets to experience it or is it just going to be one huge production at a time (as usual) when I can’t get on? Or is it just going to be a fait accompli as soon as the servers go live?

I’m guessing we won’t actually be there for Deathwing smashing stuff up; that the cinematic takes that place, and we just get to come in and help pick up the pieces afterwards.

I doubt they will continue, considering they were supposed to be the lead-in to the Shattering.

ETA: As I understand it, Tom, Deathwing will be appearing in a random zone every so often and killing everyone in it. I don’t know if that’s just between now and the 7th or what, though.

Yes, and getting killed by Deathwing in one of his Total Devastation attacks is good for a Feat of Strength.

Blizzard still having issues with the latest patch I see. Now the realms aren’t supposed to be up until 5:00 pm PST (8:00 my time). Bummer.

Oh well, I’ve gotten some reading done, some errands, and worked on my other hobbies. It’s amazing how productive I can be when WoW isn’t available.

IIRC, character recustomization and race change both come with complimentary (optional) name change – you simply erase your old name and enter the new one before you click “accept” while making all your other changes.

Huh. That’s pretty awesome, actually. (Assuming it’s just through the beginning of Cata).

It’s not, from what I understand. It’s going to be happening throughout Cata. Think of him as the Fel Reaver…for the whole (old) world.

Jeez, looks like you’re right. That’s gonna get tiresome after a while unless he only shows up once or twice a day.

ETA: Aha, reading beta comments, he doesn’t kill a whole zone, just a wide swath. That’s not so bad.

You know within a month there’s going to be an add-on that tracks that data-stream and puts it through predictive algorithms to give odds on where he’s going to strike next.

When you race change, it’s like you went back to the character selection screen again (except you’re locked into races that offer your class). You can select any race your class can play, either gender, customize that appearance, and (optionally) rename the character, too.

ETA: At least that’s the way it worked when I moved my DK with Inscription to Horde-side on ET, from a Night Elf to a Blood Elf, so that I could use her to supply my Mage.

It’s nothing that a well coordinated team can’t manage on their own, and, as I’ve already observed, it comes with *very *strict limitations in what kind of actions you can coordinate among the group.

Arena championships are very lucrative. If multiboxing were as powerful and game-breaking as you seem to think it is, you’d see at least a handful of top-ranked multiboxers, instead of… none.

A multiboxer will run roughshod over any solo player–but so will a group. A multiboxer will probably also be able to take on a comparable group played by inexperienced and/or poorly coordinated players. But without actually stepping over the line into illegal automation, a multiboxer will never beat a skilled and well coordinated group.

It’s two weeks to the expansion. IMO, don’t sweat it, unless you’re hardcore raiding these last two lockouts for some reason.

Delay the first. Just one more to go until my WAG is confirmed!

That was actually delay the second. Delay the first was to 1pm PST.

Oh, and the Deathwing zone kills will only happen until he’s killed–presumably that means the realm-first kill for each server.

BAM! Called it!

Honestly, I don’t know why they don’t just schedule the maintenance for longer than anticipated, and then they can give us a nice surprise when it’s done early. Instead of consistently underestimating, by hours, how long it will take every. single. fucking. time.

I mean, hey, it worked for Scotty.

Yeah, I know; it’s just that I’ve only recently gotten to the point, gear-wise, where I can reasonably do end-game content and not suck. So it’s only been recently that I’ve gotten to do fights like Sindragosa and LK. I was hoping to get in one or two more attempts before everyone’s attention is turned to leveling. Those fights are really fun!

This is ridiculous. You’ve no idea what you’re talking about.

Software allowing you to perform like a top player without being one is pretty much the definition of a cheat. Nobody uses multiboxing at tournaments because there isn’t a single ruleset – Blizzcon, MLG, Dreamhack, IEM – that’d possibly allow it. You’re rarely even playing on your own computer.

On the realms, multiboxing doesn’t work well because it has a ton of drawbacks. You’ve got composition limitations and movements issues. It takes more than a perfect swap to consistently win. That doesn’t mean it’s fair. It’s a complex game.
