New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Oh, yeah. That’s the “I’m a newb! Click this for more information!” button. You can make it go away in your interface somewhere (I forget what it’s called, but it’s under Help).

Odd that it would show up now–usually for me it only shows up for brand new characters, and then I have to poke around in the interface to remember how to get rid of it.

Now I’m stuck giggling at the mental image of this legless bone-creature waddling around with pants draped around its non-ankles.

Yeah, you’d think Marrowgar would be dropping his pants all the time.

I love that the final boss of the Forge of Souls – you know, the giant, disembodied head – drops not one, but two different sets of boots. I guess he wears them as earrings.

O_O How do you see anything?!

This is my interface. There’s times it feels too cluttered!

Thanks for the spec tuning tips. After implementing the changes, I have done a couple of Heroics and have much better aggro control.

Up to 18 frosts and 39 Triumphs, so I am hoping to get one of the 50 triumph pieces tongith. I need to decide what my first frost purchase will be before I decide which one though, to avoid wasting my time by replacing gear almost straight away.

Ah, I see. Summer is always rough for raiding, and all the pre-Cataclysm hype that is going on is definitely making quite a few people’s interest wane for pushing content. Our guild is somewhat seeing this happen, in that we can field full raids and clear our farm content, but pushing Heroic LK in 25s has been problematic. Our guild’s MT just bought a house, so he’s in the process of moving his entire family, our other resto druid is in the process of moving and going back to an old job, and one of our paladin healers (some 16 year old kid) decided to join another guild that’s at the same level of progression as we are, but more tolerant of his idiotic stunts (he and a RL friend of his decided that it would be fun to grief 20+ other people by using up all of the attempts in a ToGC PUG, so I gremoved his friend and he gquit after). Also, we may be losing a shadow priest because he is upset (read: butthurt) because he showed up late to raid on Tuesday and so didn’t get a spot on our first Halion kill. Drama abounds, and I hate it so. Oh well, I hope your issues work themselves out. I know ours will, it’s just a matter of time.

Ah, well the HoT dump should happen in the transition between both phases, but I assume that’s happening. Not sure why your tank is getting gibbed when hopping to the Fire realm, since there’s less damage taken in that realm (at least on normal). I would imagine that they would have CDs up or at least trinkets they can use to survive for the few seconds that it takes for the healers to phase in. That would be frustrating, and I’m sorry to hear it. I’m sure you will get him down next time you try though. Hope to hear about your success here soon.

Well, really, the only reason people could die in P3 is that they are taking too many stacks of Mystic Buffet. Do you have some way of tracking that for your raid, i.e. GridStatusRaidDebuff? Stacks of Mystic Buffet in conjunction with Chilled to the Bone/Instability/the Frost damage aura are the major sources of damage to the raid. If your mage is blowing themselves up with Instability stacks, then I’d be willing to bet that your melee are playing like it’s still P1 where they can stack Chilled to the Bone fairly high and be healed through it, as opposed to letting it drop after 4 stacks or so. Same with Instability and the casters. If your rotation is working, I’m assuming the tanks are living, and again, I’d assume you would know if people were failing on Frost Beacon, so that’s really the only reason that people could be dying (at least that I can think of). Make sure people are dropping their Mystic Buffet stack at least every other Ice Tomb, or else the raid damage will go exceptionally high. Your healer setup is very nice for raid damage as well, with a tree and a Disc priest, so that’s the only reason I can think of anyone dying from raid damage. Tell your DPS to not be dumb, or that they will have to wear the gimp suit, er, Frost Resist gear. I bet that will solve your problems. Good luck, and let me know if it helps. Oh, and as far as the LK fight, the worst part about learning that fight is how long it is. Once you get P1 down, wiping in P2 is aggravating because you have to keep getting to it, but it’s definitely worth it, especially for the RP value, IMO.

Hmm, well, one suggestion is replacing your A/D (for you left arrow/right arrow) bindings to strafe instead of turn. I don’t even have keyboard turning bound anywhere, and just mouse turn as it’s far superior. It will, of course, take some getting used to, but that may make strafing a lot easier for you, while keeping the rest of your bindings the same (and even freeing up Q and E for ability binds).

Due to the wall of fire, your camera probably can’t zoom out anymore than it does. I suggest just looking for the one far from you and keeping just to the right or left of that one at all times. Obviously, strafing will make it easier, so if you can make those binds more accessible/easier to use for you, then it might be worth doing so. It seems like you’re left-handed, so placing them on the arrow keys instead of using the arrow keys to turn should help. Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck on your next attempts.

ETA: Good lord, I just looked at your UI, Shin Kell. That is some kind of insane clutter you have going on.

For tanking, IMO the best one to get would be the 60 frost trinket (+228 stamina!) It’s where I went first; the rest of your gear you can fill in from heroics (ICC) and badges to get to the point you can raid ICC 10 man. Which is where I finally am. Hopefully I’ll get time next week to step in and try (Tanked ToC10, and can do VoA 10/25 now).

Haha yeah that was probably a bad time to take a screenshot, but the tips icon was annoying, besides what else am I going to do while tanking Muradin?

Here’s a better screenshot. All my friends say my UI makes people cry, I’m starting to believe them.

I’d go with the Corroded Skeleton Key (Stamina Trinket) or the Sentinel’s Winter Cloak (Tanking cloak). Trinkets and tanking cloaks seem to be really hard to find and replace so those two would be your best bet.

Yeah our DPS are usually the ones to start dropping first and I’m pretty sure Instability and Chilled to the Bone are the causes. I don’t have any way of tracking Mystic Buffet and I don’t use Grid. Not sure if anyone has any Frost Resist gear laying around but I made the suggestion to our RL and he said he’d pull out a few pieces. We also had the added problem of our offtank disconnecting during the second attempt and he never logged back on, so we had to bring in a replacement. Not to mention the disc priest was a replacement for our holy paladin who’s on vacation.

This fight is turning out to be our second BQL fight. We wiped FOREVER on BQL until we changed one little thing, now we one shot her every week. I know once we get that first kill it’ll be a one shot every time.

In other news my 78 paladin now has both cloaks that I wanted from Ahune along with a caster cloak I could use if I decide to go holy. Yay! Still no pet on any of my characters, but there are a few days left.

Ruby Sanctum 10man tonight with the guild, I can’t wait. Hoping I’ll get the chance to tank but I’m pretty sure I’ll be bringing my resto shaman. Either way it should be a lot of fun.

Stupid guild fell apart because we weren’t progressing fast enough. Four of our core raiders left. I’m really kind of pissed, because it was always a sort of laid-back guild, and they seemed perfectly fine using it to level. And now they’re all in the top Alliance guild, and I don’t think I can get there, because I’ve only got 5.2K GS and I’m not consistent yet. And I figured I could get consistent by raiding more. Which is hard without a guild. And I’m a fucking warlock, so it’s harder than hell to PUG (because it seems they’re always looking for heals/tanking).

This really, really, really sucks.

While a 232 cloak certainly won’t be better than a 264, I would definitely recommend saving up for the trinket and farming Ahune until you get the tanking cloak from him. It should serve well until you can upgrade. That’s my plan for gearing my druid. Sadly, this is the last weekend for Ahune.

His is shot in what looks like a 25-man raid. You appear to be alone. With your setup, I guarantee you a 25-man would look pretty ugly as well. Plus his screen has a higher resolution setting or smaller UI-scaling, making buttons and things actually smaller than on your screen.

Agreed. I was vaguely peeved at the new Ahune instance because 4 of my 5 80s already blew Frost trinkets on getting desperately-needed cloak upgrades (from iLvl 219) when they could have gotten a T10 set piece instead and stuck with the lower-end cloaks from Ahune for a little while. Oh well. I got my mage an Ahune cloak, and also got one for the boomkin “off-spec” form for my druid.

ooo ooo! Can I play in the Cluttered UI Olympics? http://i47.tinypic.com/34g4u9j.jpg

aktep and Shin, your UIs are pretty crowded. O.o

Okay, these are the first recent 25s I found in my screenshots folder (Thank you, Multishot!). I’m using a touch of UI scaling plus I’m playing on a 1920x1080 monitor.

VOA25 on my priest. I haven’t spent as much time on her UI as on my hunter, and it really shows. sigh I know the buffs list is stupidly long, but I’ve only run her in 10s before and need to experiment with filtering AzCastBar player auras to just the bits I care about.

VOA25 on my hunter, not much to comment there other than to note that the tooltip in the corner is TipTac, which hides when I’m in combat. Oh, and that was taken post 3.3.5 before Prat updated to be able to hide the silly social/emote buttons.

Well that was really, really, freakin’ weird. For about 38 hours, from getting off work at 7:00PM PDT Wednesday until about 9:00AM today, I was able to access everything on the Internet except the SDMB and chicagoreader.com. Nobody else in BDL seemed to be having any trouble, so apparently it was just me.

What was the name of our Alliance guild, anyway? I heard about it, but don’t remember ever hearing the name.

My mage used the Mechanical Greench (from Winter Veil, basically identical to the Mechanical Yeti) to “tank” Incendiosaurs in Searing Gorge when she was going through there at around lvl 50.

Heh - I simply couldn’t play with my interface like that. I have enough trouble with just the default visual clutter!
Dear Og, I’m getting so tired of idiots in the RDF. It’s getting depressing:

Mage, Oculus: Zoned in, set a table for everybody, everybody buffed. Tank stood there. And stood there. And stood there. Then abruptly started running, the healer right beside him, from the entrance all the way down the full length of that first stretch before the next portal before the first boss. Pulling every single mob along the way. Took time to make sure everything was rounded up in one spot, then he and the healer died and immediately dropped group, leaving the entire crowd of un-killed mobs in one place to roflstomp all over us DPS. I managed not to die, as I was hanging far enough back that when I saw what was coming I cast Invisibility and ran like hell back to the entrance, and none of the mobs wandered that far. As one of the other DPS said while running back, “I think they PLANNED that!” I had to agree, as the tank wasn’t nearly geared enough to be trying to show off how many mobs he could tank at once.

Got a new tank and healer and everything was fine (though the new tank and healer appeared somewhat inexperienced with the instance - I ended up leading the way from one stage to the next several times) until Eregos, where it became apparent that the tank, at least, really didn’t know what to do. Eregos entered the astral plane (or whatever the game calls it) and we all flew around … and then when he came out of it he came right after me. I broke of my attacks and fled, with him chasing me all over the place and blasting me. I could see the tank was still alive, but I could not locate her visually. So I couldn’t lead Eregos to her and get him off me, and she didn’t seem to be attempting to regain aggro. I died quickly, and a full wipe soon followed.

I finally found out what was going wrong, just before the second wipe. Eregos got all over me again, the tank was alive but nowhere in sight, and the healer didn’t seem to be healing her. Just before Eregos killed me again I finally spotted the tank’s drake … almost out of HP and dropping out of sight below the edge of Eregos’ platform. Instead of fleeing by flying in circles, she was trying to hide below the platform, and I have to assume that’s what she’d done previously when I couldn’t locate her. Except this time she went too far, and Eregos reset to his full HP. Wipe #2 ensued, and I quit.

OTOH, my mage did get in on a very nice PoS run. Though of course the Tyrannus didn’t drop the staff. And, of course, when I ran PoS on my pally earlier in the day the staff did drop. Kind of like the way both of my pallys have gotten the staff off Ahune, but my mage hasn’t seen it yet. He did drop the Tyrannical Beheader axe, and the guy who won the roll on it tried to give it to me for some reason, but I declined (my mage obviously didn’t need it, and my human pally already has it), so the fury warrior spoke up and said he could use it for his offhand, and so the other guy gave it to him. Pretty cool.

I also think Garfrost in PoS has the best voice emote in the game, with his dying words, “Hope … giant underpants … clean… save boss … great … shame!”

And I also need to apologize to fellow BDLer, Tiavet (don’t know who plays her) - we did a BDL Ahune run, and I didn’t even realize until some time later that I (my belf pally, anyway) had won the roll on the mage cloak Ahune dropped. Unfortunately, Tiavet had logged off and I was unable to offer to pass it over :smack:

Um, the red drake doesn’t tank Eregos as such, aggro has very little to do with it. The red drake has an ability that will redirect all harmful magic towards it but is unlikely to actually hold aggro from a player on an amber drake who knows what he is doing.

Oculus isn’t really hard these days, but if you end up with players who don’t know what to do, you will wipe, of course most people who don’t know what to do won’t inform the rest of the party either.

Well, whatever it does, the tank wasn’t doing it :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, my math was off the other day. I thought I was going to hit 95 Frosts next Tuesday, but I actually got there today. New chest armor FTW!

Last night I also got my mage out of that Royal Moonshroud Robe and into a Merlin’s Robe after I found the latter on the AH for a mere 2300g. I definitely noticed the Haste boost in the next heroic I ran

Get the Sentinel’s Winter Cloak then. It’s arguably BiS.

BiS?
