New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

It may not entirely be RNG. The way the encounter is set up makes certain positions on the platform much more difficult than others. He always puts the ice patch in front of him, and it always grows from where the tank stands towards the sides. The tornadoes alternate from his left and right side slightly towards the back. Wind blast comes at a more or less set interval, though it could be delayed a bit if he’s casting electrocute at the tank.

All that means that some spots tend to get tornado / ice patch / wind blast lined up all at the same time, while for others it’ll almost never line up (especially for the people in the back, who never have to worry about ice patch at all.)

So in short, bribe/cajole/blackmail your raid leader to put you behind him if you can.

I’m confused how being an Alch makes the drake redundant. I’m also an Alchemist, but the recipe is stupidly hard to get. The skin isn’t my favorite ever (mainly because of the color scheme), but you can’t beat having a two-person flying mount. Especially when you’re the mount.

IMO, you need to cultivate more of an attitude. If you’re going to tank randoms, it’s important to learn that balance between “prima donna” and “doormat.”

Why the fuck is this failure still in your raids? He’s not a tank; he’s a DPS in lots of Stamina gear that puts out less than half of everybody else’s numbers.

Many reasons, the most important being that he’s a nice enough kid (and yeah, he’s just a kid - 17 I think) and is the brother of one of our better raiders. In a pretty casual group there just isn’t any reasonable way to kick someone or call them out without causing more problems than you fix (someone mentioned the same problem upthread).

The reason he is tanking is that he tanked for us in the past, and seemed to be perfectly fine at it. But that was in ICC with the 30% buff and we didn’t log the raids - it’s completely possible that he wasn’t doing the right thing back then and nobody even noticed.

So in the end if you can’t really change someone’s behavior and it isn’t stopping your progression cold (well, it did on Nef but we got past it), it’s just easier to lay back, complain in private channels, and eventually step in and do the job and let him go back to DPS (where he’s actually perfectly competent).

Coasting by while other people do your job for you isn’t “nice.” It’s being a lazy, entitled dick. If the kid really is nice, the RL sitting him down for a frank but polite talk about what he needs to do to keep his raid spot as a tank should have the desired effect.

17 is more than old enough to do simple shit like cycle cooldowns for predictable damage. If he needs to make post-its for himself or keep a notebook next to the computer while he raids, then have him do that. (I’m surrounded by notecards on boss abilities, cooldown management notes, etc.) Simply refusing to do part of his job because he doesn’t want to means that he needs to either shape up or find a job where less is required of him.

Meh, I suppose. The reality is more that he just doesn’t care - it’s just a game, after all. If we win, great, if not, oh well (his opinion, to be clear). He’d much rather DPS - he only tanks because there wasn’t another choice. So yeah, certainly lazy, but not entitled, IMO. He certainly doesn’t care about gear or titles or anything - we have to make him spend his VP and force him to take upgrades.

There’s just no way he’s going to put in the effort you do for boss fights - we had to constantly remind him of boss abilities in ICC and that’s not going to change. So yeah, we’ll most likely just put him back in the DPS role where he’s more comfortable.

It’s hard to get mad at a kid playing a game for different reasons than you, ya know? Either you force him to play your way, kick him, or adjust your expectations and compensate.

If he was forced into taking then that makes sense. I still think the RL needs to reinforce that it’s a game, yes, but it’s a *multiplayer *game. There are nine other *people *behind those characters, and it’s not fair of him to expect them to not enjoy *their *game just so he can be lazy.

If he doesn’t want to tank, don’t make him tank. PUG if you have to–a PUG tank who wants to be there is better than a guild one who just wants to DPS. (Sounds like you might be up for the job yourself.)

I’m usually pretty laid back and ignore those comments, I guess it just hit a nerve when I was doing all I could yet the DPS were getting one shot by harvest. Everything was peachy up until then too. I ended up grouping with him later when I was doing a random on my DK, everything was fine until the room before Ozruk when he started bashing the rogue for no real reason and started giving orders to the tank. Some people are just weird I guess.

PuG a healer and then let me tank!

PuG me and let SK tank! Problem solved.

Okay, this cracked me up:

Entering the Blasted Lands from Swamp of Sorrows, there’s a new signpost with four arrows:

  1. Pointing back the way I came: “Swamp of Sorrows”
  2. Pointing West: “Nethergarde Keep”
  3. Pointing South: “The Dark Portal”

and

  1. Pointing South: “Hot New Orc Fortress!” (Yes, with an exclamation point)

:stuck_out_tongue:

There’s something almost surreal about watching a newcomer get the orb. It’s like watching a car accident in slow motion. You can tell their pulse is racing, and they’re trying to find the most optimal path to kite it, and then they make that crucial miscalculation… boom, the orb covers the room in its light blue sprawl of chilly death. Then there’s always that golden moment of silence on vent, where our raid leader first confirms what happened in private channels, and then verbally eviscerates the poor recruit.

My favorite part though is how they respond to the criticism. Do they try to shield themselves with a somewhat believable excuse? Or do they actually take some responsibility and accept the criticism coming their way.

Highlights from my playing session last night:

  • My shammy dinged 73. I pray to God that means I’ll get to see some dungeons outside Utgarde Keep.

  • Ran H-SFK with the guild that consisted of Shin Kell’s DK and four pallies. We Aura’d the hell out of that place.

  • Did some digging in Uldum, hoping for the Vial of the Sands, but something even more useful queued up: Ring of the Boy Emperor. Which means I’m going to have to spend more time digging now for the remaining 120 fragments I still need. But it’s a perfect upgrade for me.

So I’m back to take another few swings at Cata. My main is now exalted with all the new factions, and I’ve gathered enough Valor to get the chest-piece. Thing is, I heard a rumor that in 4.1 the valor costs are going to be reduced, and I’d rather wait if that’s the case, especially as my guild isn’t raiding (mainly because we lost about 50% of our base to Rift). Anyone know / hear of the valor cost reduction? Is it rumor? Any evidence to support it? Or should I just take the dive?

I haven’t heard anything about valor costs being reduced in 4.1. The only thing I’ve heard is that they’re changing the way VP are attained–you will get them from the first 7 heroics you run in a week instead of one per day, so you can run all seven on a single day if you like.

I haven’t heard anything about VP costs being reduced, but that could be a recent change. But my guess is that its a mutation of the fact that JP costs for materials is going to be cut in half - so using your JPs to buy cloth, herbs, etc will be cheaper.

Ah, okay. I can dig that; the costs were, to be kind, ridiculous. Then again, I’ve -got- gatherers. Unless they’re gonna put maelstrom crystals up there, there ain’t much I’m gonna toss at it currently.

Upon further checking, there -will- be maelstrom crystals available. Yay!

Yup, there will be Maelstroms for purchase with points. There will also be lots and lots of Maelstroms coming out of the new dungeons, since those drop epics that are below the level of what you can get from VP or raiding, so a lot of them are going to be getting sharded.

Question:

Is there a certain race I should concentrate my digging on to get the useful rares/epics for my ret pally?

Ok, I can answer my own question, Zin’rokh, Destroyer of Worlds (troll) seems to be a great melee dps weapon.

Yeah, I find it extremely amusing, and rather edifying, about how a recruit handles in-the-moment criticism. Our raids are always very vocal about pointing out mistakes on wipes publicly during the raid, though we prefer to keep more extensive pattern-type critiques as private discussions. I think, for me, the biggest issue with that fight is that it’s all about personal responsibility and there’s no way to brute force that section of the fight (which is good), but which leads those that have already learned the fight to wait while the stragglers play catch up (or just pray that “that guy” doesn’t get targeted by any important mechanic.

We finally killed Heroic Ascendant Council on Sunday and began our Sinestra pulls last night. We were getting to P3 consistently on Sinestra on our first night of pulls (I know the majority of the fight is P3, but I still felt really good about it). These kinds of fights are why I love raiding; the epic encounters with sweet RP and opportunities for much fanboyism (yes, that’s a word). Kil’jaeden and Algalon also come to mind as fights that have this flavor for me. I do have some questions for you, mil0, but I’ll hit you with those today in-game, ideally before your raid starts (if you’re on).

Good luck on that. Archaeology is a cruel mistress, though you can definitely get lucky with it. It took me a little over 100 NE combines for my doll, but I know people who are still going for it after 400+. Same with Zin’rokh. Not to be completely discouraging, but just want to make sure you know what you’re in for, especially since Zin’rokh is the only Troll rare artifact.
