Well, the one shot thing doesn’t happen all the time…your gear is actually better than mine. But I have an arcane mage, and a boomkin, both wearing mostly pvp gear with lots of +crit. These level 80 mobs have like 30k HP, so a good crit with Arcane Blast or Starsurge will take em out. I have more fun with my just-dinged 82 tankadin. He can pull 4-5 mobs at a time, and let the mobs die of exhaustion beating on his plate while he self-heals.

I keep on running into BDL members but because I’m playing Alliance I can’t do anything! If a weird night elf starts waving at you and jumping up and down and just generally being excitable, it’s very likely me!

I think “imba” was coined specifically for those classes and builds. My half-assed raid-specced MM hunter has fairly reliable continuous DPS output, but literally one-shotting anything in post-80 Cataclysm content is generally unlikely. (I can “two-shot” or “three-shot” with a single button push, of course: yellow attack plus auto-shot white attack plus wild quiver free shot. That’s kinda one-shotting, but it’s not like one yellow attack with a high 5-digit quantity will explode my target before the follow-ups arrive. Hell, my best aimed shot crit is < 50k, and that’s when I have a few procced or item buffs rolling.

Heh. Similar deal with my blood DK. The only annoyance is that since many of my attacks are multi-target, I can inadvertently pull in wandering mobs or even repops, meaning I can stand fighting in one spot for hours at a stretch. Kinda like spelling “banana”: I know how to spell it, I just don’t know how to stop. It’s tiring I I just want to get my dozen kills and walk away. I have definitely learned how to pull the fight off to a corner to allow it to actually end, someday.

Huh, interesting. Blizzard is giving a free week to everyone whose account has been expired for at least a month. (Probably only applies to people who bought Cata.) I have a lot of crap going on now (not to mention TF2 and other new Steam games I’m being tempted by), but I’ll probably do it at the end of the month if the offer is still open.

Did you wanna know for sure?

Adventures in Tanking–So I tanked my first Cata dungeon last night. Black Rock something or other…maybe Caverns? The one with the ogre/giant that will periodically appear and clear some trash for the party. No hunter in the group, but luckily a rogue stepped up to the plate to fill our dumbass quota for the run. The guy would not quit pulling. Not sapping, or otherwise making himself useful…but pulling random mobs, bosses, whatever caught his attention. Fortunately, the healer and another DPS were guildies, and rock solid players, so we got through it without too much hassle.

I struggled a bit with the boss that has to be dragged in and out of the column of flame. Two wipes there–the first because the healer caught a lag spike and could not cast, the second because I left him in the flame too long, and the AOE killed two DPS before I could move the boss. Third time was the charm, though, and now that I know that fight, it should be cake next time. The fucking rogue won the plate chest piece that dropped off Beauty on a greed roll, because I timed out and could not hit the button for need in time. I damn near blew a gasket, but eventually we shamed him into giving the obvious tank drop…and major upgrade…to me.

Also tanked Galv in AV for the first time in the 80s bracket. Easy-peasy. Was gonna tank Drek, but I got killed defending the East Tower, and Drek was dead before I could get back. Tried to tank the boss in Isle of Conquest. Not so easy-peasy at 82. That guy hits like a truck, and I don’t really have the HP to tank him yet.

Forget about the curveball, Wolkie…Give him the heater.

Did the rogue stand in the beams for the second boss? Because if he managed to do that right, that makes up for a lot of dumbass-ness elsewhere.

You could switch factions…

Oh, stop teasing us!

No, he pulled that boss. From the steps. With a ranged weapon of some type…maybe a throwing dagger. I grabbed the boss, and the other two dps did the blocking duty. Rog wondered why he wasn’t getting healed much…the healer was much nicer than I am. I woulda let his ass die early and often, until he quit doing shit like that. Our healer kept him alive…just barely.

Don’t worry, we imba folks pay for it in other ways to balance it all out. I’ll give you an example from our raid last night –

As a boomchicken, every second of a fight should literally be spent casting my next nuke, unless I’m moving. For Maloriak, I literally stood there, not casting, staring at the threat meter because my next spell would rip aggro from the tank. 30% of the time, I stood there, not casting, waiting for my threat to roll down the list. I pulled about 18k dps for the fight, and that includes the AoE phases. Meanwhile, the rogue and hunter were both pulling well over 21k dps and staying well below me in threat. It’s really vexing that I get no threat dump or threat reduction abilities, and I’m seriously thinking about switching toons until our current tanks get geared a bit more. There was only one tank in our guild who could keep up with me in threat, and he’s healing now.

You get a threat dump as a nightelf, with the hide in shadows button. If you’re another race though, you’re hosed. Dropping to kitty form and hitting prowl just takes too long.

Reading everything you wrote about this guy, he’s a textbook example of why the vote-to-kick mechanic exists. Why the hell didn’t you punt him after he refused to stop being an ass?

Oh, and you were right about Blackrock Caverns. That whole mountain is full of stuff.

Blackrock Depths (BRD): Mid to upper-50s dungeon
Blackrock Spire (LBRS and UBRS): 60 dungeon, split into Lower and Upper, originally designed for a 10-man group but later returned to 5
Blackrock Caverns (BRC and H-BRC): Low-80s dungeon or 85 Heroic
Blackwing Lair (BWL): 60 raid
Blackwing Descent (BWD): 85 raid

This is incorrect. Shadowmeld is a threat hide, not a threat dump. As soon as you come out of it, your original threat is restored. Which isn’t to say it’s not useful, but it doesn’t reset threat the way that Feign Death, Invisibility, etc. does, nor does it reduct threat in the manner of Feint or Cower.

You wanna talk broken threat, by the way, come shake hands with a Fury Warrior. You know what our traditional threat dump was? A battle rez. Not even kidding. Now that we’re limited to one per encounter, our mechanics are even more obviously broken. When I was raiding, even in half-assed offspec gear against a well geared and skilled tank, I still had to spend a lot of time with my thumb up my ass to keep from peeling off.

I suppose part of “imba” is that it carries its own seeds of self-destruction: no threat mitigation. I forget that part.

I really don’t have the self-restraint to pull off threat management. I never raided old-sk00l, when threat reduction was “DPS very slowly”, and it feels… wrong to go less then all-out on a tank-n-spank opportunity. So I’ll try not to be envious of nuclear-armed dps monsters, because my chosen class has so many advantages. Hunter, specced and played well, is balanced, and it makes it a lot easier to play.

My hatis off to all of those who can play well, knowing you’re just one crit away from dragging the boss off the tank and into the ranged squishies. With great power comes great responsibility.

Yeah, I used to laugh at fury warriors and frost DKs when I was raiding on my rogue. Now that I’m a boomkin, I suppose I am eating my just desserts

ETA: Popping cat form and hitting Cower are just a terrible idea for moonkin – you have to run into melee to use it, where your threat threshold drops from 130% to 110%. Bad. Idea.

Technically, those are just deserts, unless it’s a particularly ironic sundae.

And yes, anyone who tries to tell any Druid but a Feral one to use Cower is an idiot. And anyone who tried to tell even a Feral Druid to use Cower during the last expansion was also an idiot.

I’m thinking of rolling a druid to play with. I know I don’t really want to tank or heal in dungeons, so I’m thinking cat is 4 fyte. Does anyone make bear 4 solo?

I’ve got a 60 Feral Druid, and while she has a Bear offspec for when I want a fast dungeon, I play her as Cat when I’m soloing. She tears through mobs like butter. Now, granted, she’s *also *decked to the teeth with Heirloom gear, but even without it, you should be moving through mobs way too fast for it to make a difference. Especially since you can just stop and heal yourself anytime–as Feral, it’s not like you’re using the mana for anything else.
