New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Dalaran is a good place to set your hearthstone because it has portals to every major city in the game. There is an inn for each of the two factions that is near a set of portals to all the capital cities, plus Shattrath and another place that I can’t remember now. The Alliance sector is on the side of town with the fountain and the Horde sector is on the side with the well. Both are right in the middle of the area. If you try to walk into the opposite faction’s area, you’ll be instantly teleported rght back onto the street. There are also daily quests and a couple of dungeon quests in Dalaran (crafting dailies and quests for Violet Hold).

Hearthed back to the Amberpine Inn before I saw this. Guess I’m screwed, huh?

Thanks

Q

theres a guy in vailance keep will port u to Dalaran on request, so nah, you’re not screwed.

Wow, I am having the devil’s own good luck this week!

Since I have now gotten Rivendare’s Deathcharger and the Zulian Tiger for both my mage and my death knight (all within the last month or so!) I was running out of rare things I could farm solo. I mentioned this to my friend who said, “Why don’t you go to Molten Core and work on Thunderfury?”

Hmm, I thought. This was the same friend who, when we were on the same server, we went for weeks and weeks and weeks–in order to start the quest, you have to have one of two “Bindings of the Windseeker” drop from one of two bosses in MC (two bosses drop Bindings–one left and one right). The drop rate is insanely low. People literally go for months and never see one drop–and those who get one are usually months away from the second one.

So I gathered up the spouse on his ret pally and said, “Hey, will you go to MC with me so I can try to get a binding?” He agreed and we set off. MC isn’t that hard to duo on a very well geared 80 DK tank and a reasonably well geared 80 ret pally, so we made our way to the first boss we wanted to kill, Garr, fairly fast. Took him down quickly. “Let me loot him,” I said, and, taking a deep breath, I clicked.

Bindings of the Windseeker. There it was: orange text and all. I stared. I told my guild. I told my friend, who I have on RealID so we can chat cross-server. “glare,” he replies.

We didn’t have much time left, so we hurried off to the other boss, Baron Geddon. After killing a few core hounds, elementals, and other assorted trash, there he was. Another one not too hard to kill for DK and pally, and soon he was down as well. “There’s no way,” I thought. “I’m insane to even think I’ll get another one.”

I clicked.

Bindings of the Windseeker.

I looked again. It couldn’t be right! I’d gotten both bindings–both ridiculously rare, never-drops-for-anybody bindings–in the SAME run??

I grabbed them up, reported to my guild (“this is not a repeat from the last tell!”) and reported to my friend. (“glare glare glare*”) We didn’t have time to go any farther because my ret pally buddy had to leave, but I was a very happy camper.

Now all I have to do is go back and kill Ragnaros for his drop and then farm (or buy) 10 Elementium bars (not cheap or easy, unfortunately)–at this rate, I should get my Thunderfury about the same time I get my Shadowmourne (22/50 shards as of this week!)

Of course, I also did the only other logical thing that I should do with that kind of magical luck: I went out and bought a lottery ticket. Here’s hoping the luck extends to the real world (though I sincerely doubt it will–I think my DK lives a charmed life!)

Where in VK and what’s his name, OAOW?

Thanks

Q

In the pub, stood by a bookcase. Can’t remember his name sorry.

OAOW,

I checked near all bookcases at the Val Keep Inn (even the one near the door of the pub), but no one’s offering the transport.

I was also at Valgarde looking for transport, but no go.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m thinking that this quest is offered only once and if you don’t hearthstone Dalaran while you’re there, you won’t be able to reaquire it from any other quest-giver and the only alternatives are:

  1. Levelling up past 74

  2. Finding a warlock to transport you

  3. Even thought of Shatt, but there’s no portal to Dalaran there.

Thanks for your help, my friend! Looks like you’re really burning through the levels and I remember it seems like only yesterday when you started playing!

Quasi

Magister Dath’omere is who OAOW is thinking of, but he will only offer the teleport if you didn’t turn in the quest in Dalaran after taking the teleport the first time.

Easiest way to get back is to spam trade “looking for port to dal will tip” and wait for a mage to send you on your way.

Alternatively, you can ride/fly into Crystalsong and use that crystal underneath the city. If you ride in from northern Dragonblight, the mobs you encounter should be easy enough to handle.

didn’t know the guy had specifics, he just offered me the port right out…

Yeah, when you hit 74, you’ll get a quest to go to Dalaran and turn in a ring, use the crystal, etc. A handful of NPCs will offer this quest. If you never turn in the ring (eg, you abandon the quest), you will still be able to get the teleport anytime you want.

Hey, I think I found Yeticalayla’s T11 armor.

My off spec…

I think our three-tank strat is definitely influenced by the fact that we’re tank-heavy right now. We’ve got a Feral tank, a new Prot Pally, a DK tank, and three Prot Wars. Depending how many of us are online for any given raid, there’s usually at least one or two of us sitting out and the rest in our offspecs. So when there’s the possibility for a three-tank fight, rather than have somebody in their offspec, we’ll usually just go with the higher number of tanks.

For the raiders out there, how do your guilds cope with the potential for burnout in raiding?

Variety. Working on H-LK, you don’t have the option of, say, leaving some easier bosses up to go back and work on, but you could consider your 10-man options, or other 25-man content. Maybe go back and work on getting some people their Ulduar drakes, or push toward Yogg+0. Faceroll through Sarth+3D every week until everyone has their drakes from that.

Dalaran is the capital city of Northrend. Think of it like Shattrath in Outland, or Stormwind in the old world. There are banks, profession trainers, and gear vendors for tier pieces and epic badge gear. There are also portals to other cities: you’ll find portals to Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, The Exodar, and Shattrath inside the Alliance enclave, as well as a portal to Wintergrasp that’s sometimes open. Inside the Violet Hold, there’s a portal that will take you to the entrance of the Caverns of Time in Tanaris.

Since you’ve been taught how to use the crystal, you should be able to get back up that way. You just have to ride back to Crystalsong Forest, look for the crystal in that purple/pink bubble under the city, and click it. That will take you back in. Then, look for the Alliance inn in the southern half of the city. (There’s also a neutral inn in the middle.) There aren’t any guards to give you directions, but various NPCs standing around can direct you in the same way.

Congratulations!

Soooooo…

KAHBUEME LIVES!

Got my Hughesnet hookup done on Saturday, was patching most of Saturday night, but was able to get some playing in yesterday.

Lvling seems to go much quicker than I remember–but I do have full rested experience. I went from about 4 bubs under 74 to 6 bubs over with a mixture of questing and BGs.

Latency is an issue. I’m showing 1300 to 1700 most of the time, but that’s still playable in BGs. I won’t be topping the kills or damage chart, and I get killed a few more times than I did back in the day, but playing with a slight delay is infinitely better than not playing at all. Hesistant to try a dungeon, especially while still relearning the game…

What do I have to do to fly in Northrend? I heard something about paying for training…how much? I went ahead and bought my 2nd spec last night, which burned the bulk of my bank account for the moment. Was worth it, though. My off spec is now a full on Frost/Arc PVP spec. I only did one BG with it, but I liked what I saw…

Grats on getting re-started.

There is a trainer in Dalaran, and another in Sholazar Basin, who can teach you “Cold Weather Flying”. (There might be others in the Borean Tundra/Howling Fjords; not sure). It costs either 800 or 1,000 gold (I forget which), and you can only learn it when you’re level 77 or higher. (Once you’re level 80, you can buy a tome of Cold Weather Flying that you can send to your alts, but during the initial level-up, you’re stuck on the ground until 77).

Cool deal. I’ve got a little time to save up for the cold weather flying training then. Money seems to come easily in WotLK.

Anybody got suggestions for Mage glyphs for my frost/arc pvp spec? I’m thinking one of the major glyphs should be either perma-frosty but with no freeze, or the other other that reduces the cooldown for Frosty? Not sure what else is good, though…

Specifically, there are pairs of purple-clad wizards standing around here and there, who give directions.

Quasi, do you have the flight point at Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight? I’ve shot a video of my level 75 warrior (you’re level 74, right?) riding on horseback from Wyrmrest Temple to Dalaran, to show you the way, but it will take a little while to prepare and upload the video. I’ll post the link when it’s ready. However, it will only work if you did the “learn how to use the teleport crystal” thing - you did that while you were in Dalaran, right? The short quest where you click on the crystal and teleport down to the ground below the city, and then click the other crystal to come back up?
Speaking of my warrior - since I hauled her out of limbo to make her my ore-farming toon, I’ve managed to get her from level 74 to level 75 entirely through doing the fishing and cooking dailies in Dalaran, killing mobs to skin (and in self-defense), and exploring

I felt quite the fool when I got her killed the other day. She’d gone into Wintergrasp to do the “Dangerously Delicious” fishing daily, and afterward she flew around WG looking for mining nodes. She stopped to mine a node right on the border between WG and Sholazar, and then I decided to fly her down into Sholazar to mine there. So she mounted up and launched herself off the edge of the cliff there … and that’s when I realized I had mounted her on her horse instead of her gryphon :smack: That’s a looooong way down!

What’s the guild take on friends of Dopers? I have a friend who is no slacker when it comes to the game - he’s been playing since it came out, but he’s never rolled Horde. He has a bajillion higher level Alliance toons. Anyway, he’s thinking of making a Horde toon finally.

Well, we’ve had friends-of-Dopers before. Mordrin, who does the Wednesday night dungeon runs with us is an IRL friend of mine who is not a Doper (to my knowledge).

I’m not the only vote but I personally don’t have a problem with it. Considering that we can’t quite put together a 10-man group on a regular basis, we should welcome good players in my opinion.

Welcome back!

Cold Weather Flying can be trained at level 77 for 1,000 gold. (Any toon that can buy CWF can also buy an Heirloom book for the same price to send to lower-level alts.)

If you’re looking to PvP, you almost certainly will **not **want to take the permanent Water Elemental glyph. That’s designed to increase DPS for PvE Frost Mages. You do not want to lose out on that extra snare.

I’ve done that while farming in WG. I have my macro set so that it mounts me on a ground mount instead of a flying one while I’m in WG, so that means I have to manually mount a flyer when I’m there outside of battles. There’s nothing quite like the feeling in the pit of your stomach when you hit the spacebar to launch yourself up and away, only to… leap majestically about two feet up and then plummet the whole way down. :smack: Fortunately, I had enough time to click my “naked” button on my Outfitter bar, and at least spared myself the repair bill.

I’m pretty sure we have at least one person who’s never even been to the SDMB, so there should be no problem with Doper friends joining.

Tsk. I told you about GoGoMount. I never have an issue with wrong mounts even in WG; it gives me ground mounts when the battle’s in progress and flying mounts when it’s not.
