My duagher was accepted into a one-month-long internship type program in New York City. Her college has a prolonged break in January, and she’ll be filling it with the internship.
Here’s a the problem- the internship is in NYC. I have no friends, family, etc. closer than Princeton New Jersey. Any ideas or suggestions as to how one can stay for a month in New York without going broke, and without staying in unsafe conditions?
You might as well just buy a condo…once she has been to NYC, chances are she isn’t going to want to leave.
However - you might try contacting any of the universities there to see if they have dorm rooms open (doubt it, but worth a shot).
When I lived in Berlin and would come to NYC for a month, I used to have a friend contact SAG and Equity…they (used to at least) have a list of actors who wanted to sublet apartments while on road shows. I always found a place that way. They ain’t cheap as they want the month’s rent (apts in NY are a bit pricey) but for the most part, they are furnished and usually nice.
I knew a woman from Vienna would would always stay at some (Christian?) Women’s building - single rooms by the month or longer for single women only - but that was many years ago and I am not sure it even exists anymore.
nothing is wrong with Princeton if you don’t mind a daily 90-120 minute commute each way (that includes traffic jams - which are notorious in this area)
She could look in Hoboken & Jersey City for Sublets also. The Path trains are a fast way into the city. Does the HR department of the internship have any resources? I understood that was common. Won’t mean a nice place, but it is one more avenue. What are you expecting to pay? You’ll be lucky if it under $1000.
If you drive, yea, but the NJ Transit Northeast Corrider goes to NY Penn Station from Princeton in an hour or so (assuming no delays, I know.) I used to ride it all the time, just like thousands of people do everyday. If it comes down to saving money and being safe, and it’s only for a month, I’d say stay in Princeton with friends/family, ride the train, and catch up on some reading. Princeton is lovely.
Oh I know, you don’t need to convince me! It’s why I asked if she’d rather stay in the city and suggested craigslist. I wouldn’t blame her one bit. But if it really came down to saving money and being safe, I think Princeton is a viable option that shouldn’t be automatically excluded.
If the internship is with the ASCE, they must know that some young person from the midwest is going to have problems finding accomodations in NYC for a month, so presumably they have something lined up or can suggest someone. Unless they intended the internship to go to someone local who could make their own arrangements.
Lots of people in NY take off for warmer climes in January. She should be able to find a cheap one month sublet. It will be a great experience for her. Having her stay in Princeton, as nice as Princeton is, will take a whole lot away from the NYC-when-you-are-young experience. And you’re only young once.
Go for Craigslist. Then ask folks here how safe the neighborhood is.
