Do colleges in New York issue ID cards that double as an ID and driver’s license?
I’m in Ohio, and have been getting a lot of kids trying to buy beer with ID cards issued in New York as college ID cards, I tell them that they need a driver’s license, and they tell me it is a New York drivers license and ID card. I sent them away to try it at another store.
My question is, are they legit? Is that how it’s done in NY? I’ve had maybe 5 different kids try this in the past month, all driving cars with Ohio plates, but having a “valid” dual issue NY drivers license/college ID.
Can’t really post an answer to your question, but I can tell you about another avenue: simply refuse to accept certain forms of “ID” (as you already have). I’ve seen some places refuse to honor my military ID because they’d simply never seen one of the new CAC cards before and were unfamiliar with it–they had no knowledge to verify if it was legitimate or not. Actually, several places did this in Montana, and I can think of a few that probably still do. If it doesn’t say, “Drivers License” or “Operators License,” I’d be just as suspicious.
Just stick to your guns, man. College IDs sound fishy at best. Would you sell someone a weapon based off that college card?

I’ve heard of state-issued non-drivers ID cards. But a university-issued ID card sounds like, well, Student ID which, apart from possibly getting you sweet discounts on pizza and the like, has little-to-no use off-campus.
AFAICT, New York issues non-drivers ID cards the same way Ohio does, through the DMV.
NYS Colleges give out student IDs cards. In some cases, they have a special ID for seniors (who are over 21) which allow them to drink.
But the standard college ID doesn’t have any force outside of campus (and maybe in the places around campus that accept them as debit cards). Even if they had the special student ID for seniors, I’d ask for a driver’s license.
Not that there aren’t fake driver’s licenses out there, of course.
Our university does not issue IDs that are considered valid State of New York ID. Since we don’t sell alcohol on campus, it doesn’t make sense for us to issue differing IDs for under- and over-21s, either.
In any event I don’t see any possible reason a private institution of any sort would be allowed to issue a valid state ID.
I assumed that they tried to pull something like “Lets get a license from some far away state and see if it works”. I told them to try it somewhere else.
That driver’s license page is interesting, kind of useful, if you have to card lots of people.
