New York Times hires unapologetic racist writer

Cite.

Where do I call anyone a pussy or a fag?

Cite?

Where does he say something like #cancel black people?

I’ve called people out in this thread for not having an exact quote ready but this is really stretching it. He doesn’t have to actually utter or type those words to be just as or more offensive.

Wow, that’s pretty racist and ignorant.

But do you see a difference between ignorant racism and #cancel white people?

Theu don’t have to use those words exactly. Any calls for genocide will do.

Do you see a difference between calls for racial genocide and ignorant racism?

Btw, what’s more offensive than a call for racial genocide?

You have to make a judgement call as to whether someone is seriously calling for it or not. An incredible claim for “cancellation” is around as offensive as any other egregious racism. If it had been from a group known to be militant, that would be another story.

I’ve basically dismissed all your quotes of Jeong, because you haven’t presented any in context, nor have you taken into account either the conversational nature of twitter and the inherent constraints of the (now loosened) 140 character limit.

To say that #cancelwhitepeople is eliminationist or advocating genocide is laughable.

Pull the full conversation. This isn’t a big request.

Haha OK so according to you,

Complaining of “reverse racism” and minimizing and invalidating the historical suffering actual racism caused while disregarding on going structural flaws that still cause suffering today is will solve the problem right?

My white systematic privilege is not threatened by an LGBT author who made some bad life choices in responding to on-going abuse years ago.

To be clear, I am not perfect and will have to struggle to ensure I do my best to treat my fellow Americans as equally as possible, but as bigotry is primarily based out of fear and ignorance how is your zero tolerance policy going to help us move forward.

Oh, I see, because you are simply implying it with all of your anal sex imagery, that makes it better, is that it? You have to call someone a pussy of a fag in order to demonstrate your homophobia?

“I didn’t say you were a fag, I just said that you are getting fucked up the ass.”

Yeah, and you have a problem with Jeong because of her language.

At least she has apologized, and realized that that language is not helpful. You double down and continue to slur homosexuals by insisting that being understanding to those who have had less privileged than oneself is like having anal sex.

Yes – years and years of unapologetic ignorant racism is far, far worse than a handful of dumb tweets that foolishly throw bigotry back in the face of bigots and are apologized for.

Note I can’t find anyone in this thread saying that her statements were acceptable or proper, some of us are just willing to forgive past mistakes.

Have y’all discussed Sarah Jeong’s role in the Naomi Wu fuckery? I read this a couple of days ago and immediately removed VICE from my bookmarks. I put up with them ripping off their writers as the pains of a new business, especially since they seemed to make good when they were finally called out on it a while back. But this is too much; I won’t give a cent or a click to them again if I can help it until and unless they apologize and try to make things right.

The TL;DR is that Naomi Wu is a young lady in Shenzhen, China who makes things, tech things. She’s brilliant and funny and awesome and was actually making a living (illegally) thru Patreon and YouTube. Because of VICE not complying with an agreement that Miss Wu demanded before their interview with her (and, to be fair, Miss Wu’s own actions when she attempted to retaliate) they have destroyed her sources of income and placed her life in jeopardy from the government. Jason Koebler and Sarah Jeong played major roles in this, and so I’ll have nothing to do with them or their employers until I learn that Miss Wu is satisfied with things.

No no, this doesn’t fly. Rush Limbaugh is a sack of shit who has said all kinds of really fucked up things, even if not that exact phrase. I’m sort of on your “side” ITT generally, but you’re barking up the wrong tree here. We (meaning not just progressives, but center-left liberals, centrists, even center-right folks) need to adhere to a higher standard than Rush and his ilk set.

PREACH!

A black woman may report a white man to HR for the microaggression of complimenting her hair, but straight white men are supposed to HTFU and not be such whiners when their existence is derided. This foolishly pushes straight white guys (especially younger ones, the ones most likely to still be solidifying their political orientation) to feel compelled to choose from essentially one of three stances:

(1) Wear the hairshirt and virtue signal to other progressives and woke POC that you lament straight white male hegemony every bit as much as they do. This approach is exemplified by iiandyiii ITT and others. It will win you the most acceptance in progressive spaces, but most men have too much pride to go this route. I know I do.

(2) Grit your teeth, maybe push back here or there, but recognize that as annoying as it is to be subjected to this shit, there are still many more reasons to support Democrats than the loathsome GOP. Just deal, and remain an uneasy political ally with the “woke” far left. This is the path I choose. I could never stomach supporting Republicans, although if our political system had room for multiple parties I would love to be in the one that represented the center-left, and not have to mingle with, and rely on, BLMers or Bernheads (although we’d still have to make common cause and try to compromise when it came time to haggle over legislation).

(3) Be seduced by the entreaties from the alt-right, and go join a group that satisfies the deep human need to have your selfhood celebrated—not to mention being able to freely carp about people like Jeong among those who will cheer you on. I’m not justifying this choice—it is not morally defensible—but to assemble a winning political coalition in this country you have to attract the support of not just your own partisans, but people who are legitimately vulnerable to going to the other side. And we shoot ourselves in the feet politically by making our camp so unwelcoming to straight white men that they will only join it if they are willing to push through all that.

As I said in the other thread, I think a lot of progressives don’t understand the realities of the numbers game when it comes to politics and demographics. They imagine that the current status quo involves white men being the mirror image, politically, of black women. But in fact, if white men gave only 3% of their votes to Obama in 2012, as black women did to Romney, and you kept all other groups the same, Romney would have won the election in a blowout bigger than Reagan’s 49-state wipeout of Mondale in ‘84, and nearly as big as LBJ’s win over Goldwater in ‘64.

So Democrats still have a lot of white men voting for them, even if it’s not the majority. And they need to court those votes, because there are as many non-Hispanic white male voters as there are black female, black male, Hispanic male, and Hispanic female voters combined.

And you don’t appeal to them by not only shit-talking them but doing so in a way that holds them up as the source of everything loathsome about the country’s politics and culture. At least when a POC is microaggressed against, or even outright subjected to vile racist slurs, they can have the comfort of being on the righteous side, and get support and comfort from progressives when they complain about what happened to them. If white men complain, they are “fragile”, unless, again, they succumb to the lure of the right.

I doubt whether Vice will make things right. They can, however, apologize.

Here’s the key quote from the medium piece:
My emails to Vice and American journalists were ignored, Vice was refusing to honor the agreement, refusing to even consult an expert on my risk.
That latter part - refusing to consult an expert - is where the problem lies. Naomi Wu doesn’t understand the ins and outs of the West and knows it. But burning a source for gossipy reasons is pretty shitty behavior. ISTM that if you’re going to do that, you might first make a couple of telephone calls.

Jeong appears to have said some ignorant things.

Let’s have a cite for this ridiculousness.

LOL. You’re a liar, a fantasist, or both.

I know that this makes you feel better about your on insecurities but there is no shame in this.

I am white, or at least what is now called white and I was born that way. It is a part of who I am but there is no shame in it at all. What I lament is my fellow “white” Americans passionately fighting to maintain bigotry.

It is true I am embarrassed for you by your troglodytic bigotry and the impact that has on our fellow human beings. But the largest emotion is that of pity; because you place so much of your personal perceived value on your ability to subjugate other human beings. Being a coward who is unwilling to stand up for your fellow American’s and freedom must be pretty stressful. I can’t imagine being so paralyzed by fear that I was unwilling to stand up for what I thought was right.

But can you clarify what type of coward you are? Do you Grit your teeth despite wishing that you could own another human being or lament that you have to deal with these creatures that are sub-humans to you?

Of course the only thing that can be wheedled out for you is bigotry, you have nothing else to lose.

Pffft. Talk about a fantasist! In fact, I find it very regrettable that on my father’s side, his rich New York family derived much of its establishing wealth from a large plantation in Barbados before moving to the U.S. in the nineteenth century, while my mother in researching her Voyageur ancestor discovered a bill of sale for a slave in New Orleans.

But as one would think you might have noticed, I have said over and over and over that I strongly support reparations for slavery. You’d think that might make it plain to you that I am not actually pro-slavery; but if not, here you go: I am against slavery. Satisfied?

But somehow you think you have to hate yourself to treat these people as equals?

You are the one that said there was shame in treating these people as what they are, human beings.

Reparations are pretty hollow if you simply want to buy indulgences for sins in order to wash your hands of them. It is one thing to make up for the past, but why are you “ashamed” to try and change what you are, which is at minimum, complacent right now?

Putting aside the over the top way you phrase this, I get the impression you think every white guy who isn’t gritting their teeth in anger over this presumed assault on white maleness is being disingenuous. Is that truly what you believe? That there is no way to be both male and white and not feel somehow, deep down, aggrieved by the left?

Or do you recognize that there are white guys out there that really don’t feel insulted or marginalized.
