New Yorkers: What Is Your Problem With Las Vegas?

I live in Las Vegas.
I love New York. Lived there. Have friends who still live there.
They always send me clippings from the NY Times about Las Vegas.
Man…what a bunch of arrogant snobs.

In every article about Las Vegas, they have to mention the “problem” of walking by loud slot machines (NY is so quiet). They always mention the garrish neon (unlike Times Square?) and never fail to mention the “Walmart crowd” who fequent tacky buffets (anyone remember Beefsteak Charlies?).

Is there some sort of competition between NY and LV that I am not aware of?

No one here feels it necessary to piss on NYC.

Plus, I have met a lot of transplanted New Yorkers living quite happily here, and my friends who have visted have ALL come back for at least a second visit.

So, what is the problem? Is it just the NY Times, or did we do something in Las Vegas to offend you?

First I’ve heard of it.

Sounds like your friends are dickheads.

But I fail to see what’s wrong about talking about loud slot machines or garish neon signs. Do those things not exist in Las Vegas? Don’t they get annoying after a while? So what’s the big deal? You’re free to complain about all the car-honking and snooty doormen when you’re visiting.

Times Square is lame. At least when it was full of porno theaters and crackwhores it had character.

Beefsteak Charlie’s! Oh, I’d forgotten that place! Man, they did suck.

Which is probably why I forgot about them.

Umm… IMNSHO if you don’t live on Manhattan (not in one of the five buroughs, mind you, but Manhattan itself.) you’re a second class citizen as far as the NY Times is concerned. And many of their subscribers buy into that, too.

When I was in college my roommate from NYC couldn’t understand why I had my local paper mailed to me so I could keep current on local events in my hometown. He asked, several times, wouldn’t it make more sense to get a REAL paper like the NY Times?

Ummmmmm, no.

I’m a former NYer who gets the Times every day, and has no problem with Vegas. I haven’t noticed ajy such bias - I think they’re only sending you bad stuff, and not sending you any positive articles.

Except for the casino, you mean?

Most New Yorkers I know think Las Vegas is a lot better than Atlantic City, so I think your friends are jerking your chain.

It’s just so far away. . . :frowning:

Us NY’er love the Indians (a.k.a Native Americans), after all they sold us this island for $24. Las Vagas gives the poor Indians too much competition at their casinos.

Actually, I don’t like gambleing, won a trip to Vagas, and loved it. There is just so much to see there even w/o gambleing.

Perhaps there is animosity towards Vegas here in NYC that many of us are unaware of. I saw a car today here in Queens with NY plates that said IH8VEGAS.

The first thing I though of was this thread.

I’m not a New Yorker, so I am likely off base, but when someone says they hate Vegas doesn’t it just mean they don’t want to live there? I’d hate to live there too, but it doesn’t mean I won’t go there for a visit.

I’ll say. This is coming from a Queens…(ian? ite?), and as far as some people are concerned, Manhattan is New York.
