Australia was put on a tsunami alert as a result of the quakes.
My mother lives in Dunedin and reports no problems. The area that the quake itself occurred is not populated.
Glad to hear it. I did note though that there were reports of damage as far afield as Christchurch and Greymouth.
That wouldn’t surprise me. I haven’t talked to Mum about it directly, just seen her comments on Facebook.
From the news tonight it just seems the only thing was stuff falling off shelves, a few cracks in buildings and some minor landslides in Fiordland.
It was reported as a silent rolling motion, no sudden shakes. So that might explain the lack of (major) damage, as well as the fact that the area the quake was centered in is virtually uninhabited?
Apparently it lasted at 7.8 for about one and a half minutes. That would have felt like a long time!
