Newark Airport -> Manhattan (Cheap)

I’ll be flying into Newark Airport on a Sunday and will need to get into Manhattan.

Whats the cheapest way to do this? I’m on a pretty tight budget so a Taxi is out of the question. The only luggage I’ll have is a medium-sized backpack.
Thanks.

Take the AirTrain train to the PATH train into Manhattan.

Here’s the link for the PATH train.

Actually, the Airtrain (the Newark Airport monorail) runs to the NJTransit trains as far as I know. (The two end up in different places in Manhattan, so it’s relevant - NJTransit runs to Penn Station, at 34th Street, while the PATH is somewhere much further downtown.) For the point-to-point schedules on their website, check for both the Northeast Corridor Line and the North Jersey Coastline trains, since they both run that line, but the website (since they ‘improved’ it last year) doesn’t recognize that fact and makes you check them separately.

It isn’t nearly as cheap as it should be - they charge you a couple of times what they do from stations further from NYC, but you need to swipe your ticket through a turnstile, so you can’t get away with buying something for a cheaper station. But it’s probably less than half the price of a cab. (~$12 vs. ~$30, although I’ve never taken mass transit to or from Newark Airport, so those are both estimates.)

Have a great trip!
