Newbiedom: When does it end?

When does the state of newbiedom end? Is one a newbie based on:
(a) post count
(b) time since registration
© some complex and arcane combination of (a) and (b)

or is it down to a secret meeting of which ever one of the cabals around here that decide such things?

I am curious. I am newbie. Educate me, oh wise ones!

Oh, BTW: What are you called beyond newbie status? Oldbie? Veteran? Old fart who yells at kids to get off your lawn?

Hmmmm, I think I remember there being an equation for determining your “newbieness”. Can anyone find that old thread? I don’t even know what to search for.

Thanks for the lead, Mahaloth. I found a thread, thanks to you: The SDMB Rites of Initiation.

Great! I didn’t know exactly what to look for either, hence this thread. (I mean, “newbie” the term is as common around here as … well, you know.)

And – by this formula, I have just three months to go.

WooHoo! This means that I am not a newbie! Yippie! Even though I only REALLY started posting last month. I’ve been lurking for a year and a half; that really improves my rating.

:smiley:

Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.
:slight_smile:

i’m still a newbie?! You guys! You don’t think i’m a newbie, do you? Who here does. Come on, I challenge you.

When you can snatch this coin from my hand, you will be ready.

huh? Oh. Best 2 out of 3?

I normally think you’re not a newbie when you’ve been around longer, and have more posts than me.
actually, I thought my newbieness ended after I got 500 posts

That’s not fair jadailey cheated! :smiley:

What if I’ve been reading these threads for over a year now, but only finally made up my mind to register recently? Does that count?

Threads like this one, the never-ending search for the secret formula to life, love and success by billions of hungry, desperate newbies appears roughly every two months ago. Last one was November 2000.

Maybe (just a suggestion here to mods and admins, and the Higher Echelons) Green Bean’s formula could be put in a FAQ, for all starry-eyed newbies like me to gaze upon when first we tread these sacred threads.

At current rate, I’ve only got about six weeks to go. Unless I incur someone’s wrath around here. The joy is killing me.

[sub]Sorry. I’m feeling the effects of a great night out with friends, and a couple of glasses of very nice medium white. I have a low tolerance to booze at times. This is when I make crazy suggestions. Feel free to ignore.[/sub]

Everyone sing with me: Zoggie is a newbie! Zoggie is a newbie!

Nyaa, nayaa, nayaa!! :smiley:

Ok guys, you want to know when newbiedom ends? When I get the cash from each of you.
Actually, post counts, length of time on the board, etc. has nothing to do with it. There are lots of people that have more posts than me that have been here a shorter length of time.
When you become a respected poster, respect fellow posters and their opinions whether you agree with them or not, and just generally add to the well-being of the board, you can consider yourself a regular. It takes time.

Damn. Ultress already said it–being or not being a newbie has nothing to do with time or posts. Personally, I believe you are no longer a newbie when:

  1. You can place your thread in the proper forum (with 95% accuracy);
  2. You know not to feed the trolls;
  3. Hi Opal!;
  4. You don’t flame people for minor things, and when you do flame, it’s in the Pit;
  5. You know who WallyM7 was, and have an idea what he means to everyone here.

Some people are no longer newbies after 20 or so posts. Some people never stop being newbies.

Great, I am not a newbie!

And you are full fledged member if somebody refers to you by name in a thread you haven’t even posted to yet. (Flames in the Pit don’t count).

Still waiting on that one. :slight_smile:
