Hey, we recently had a police officer kneel on a man’s neck and slowly strangle him to death over several minutes while he was surrounded by people recording him and begging him to stop. I can cite many other examples of people doing incredibly stupid things in front of numerous observers. Just because it’s stupid doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t intentional.
Right, that’s part of my point.
Certainly that may also be the case, and
people who aren’t right for the job (for whatever reason) should be let go.
Yes, I was expanding on it.
No disagreement here.
I hear it used every now and then, but it never struck me as inherently taboo. I think I may have used the word during my tenure on these message boards. It is less words and syllables than person of color, therefore it is more efficient. It is also used in all of those old speeches from the civil rights leaders. But it was also used to discriminate. Young people hear it in both contexts when we cover the civil rights movement in school.
“Black” or “African-American” is not an appropriate substitute because those terms are more specific. ETA: In this case, however, there was a previous person of color nominated for VP, a Charles Curtis of Kaw ancestry who ran with Herbert Hoover.
I understand the network pulling the kid for reasons given by Voyager in post #45. I suppose neither he nor I are worldly-wise enough to make it as a newscaster.

You’ve never heard the term ‘person of size’?
An employee says it on occasion she’s mid 70’s farm wife. Tells me she liked Obama voted for Clinton dislikes Trump. Still has a very strong prejudicial streak against foreigners and coloureds
. Tried to say Jesus was white and America was founded for whites. I correct as best I can without being rude because she’s ignorant and naive. And her grown kids are poisoning her mind imo. sigh She really needs to resign.
And she would probably claim that she hasn’t a racist bone in her body.
