Lohan calls Obama 'first colored president.' WTF!?

Link here.
Seriously? Wow.

This is Lindsey Lohan and you’re surprised? She’s one step away from being Paris Hilton/Britney Spears. And that picture of her is horrible.

Is ‘colored’ currently frowned upon as a term for non-whites? What’s politically correct changes so frequently I have trouble keeping current.

What’s the big deal? I know it’s not the preferred nomenclature, but I think it’s simple ignorance, not racist intent. She openly supported Obama during the race.

Maybe she got confused between “colored person” and “person of color.” One of these is OK and the other isn’t, for reasons that escape me.

The C in NAACP nonwithstanding, I’m not sure how offensive the term “colored” is to blacks.

Although it’s probably not what she meant, South Africa uses the term “Coloured” to refer to persons of mixed-race ancestry. Of course, Obama would fall into this.

I can’t get too upset. Yeah, she used a poor, out-dated and perhaps offensive term in describing Obama but it’s hard to believe that she did so out of anything except ignorance.

Or “blacks”

This reminds me of a (UK) Office episide wherein Gareth defends his grandad for calling black people “Blacks” by using the word “Coloureds”

well, only 'cause “Out of ignorance” seems to be her default setting.

True enough

I’m not suggesting it’s “okay” that she said it but I don’t see any reason to string her up for it. If she starts making a habit out of it, we can talk.

Personally I think it’s more significant that the President is a Democrat than that he is black.

And that he seems to be intelligent.

Lohan’s an idiot.

Am I being whooshed, or are you truly this stupid?

ETA: Damn, thought this was the Pit. My apologies to randwill and the mods.

I don’t think the term “colored” is offensive, but it is dated. Although, this is coming from someone severely lacking in color.

I recently read an article (can’t remember where) in which someone complained that the use of the colored was increasing, especially in reference to Obama. So it’s not just Lohan.

In my lifetime the word(s) that were considered ‘proper’ to refer to non-whites has changed a few times.

Colored people
Negroes
African Americans
Blacks

off the top of my head.

My comment was meant to reflect this fact. The humor comes from the idea that a term considered polite this year may well be considered impolite next year. Why this is so might make another good thread.

It may seem funny and be in fact irrational, but it’s always best to keep abreast of the currently polite term if possible. How ever old you are – and I’m no spring chicken myself – the use of “colored” is especially indefensible for LL because it hasn’t been the polite term in her lifetime.

Frankly I suspect that Obama would be cool with it.

“Oh shit! She called me ‘colored’ while celebrating my victory? That bitch! First day I’m in office, Secret Service gonna disappear her sorry ass!”

“That’s rich coming from someone who’s orange”

I’m actually surprised she’s aware of the term. Seems a bit before her time.

And honestly, compared with Lohan or Spears, Paris Hilton is a genius.

not one to defend lohan often, but could she of meant it in a more literal way? As in anyone non-white?
Still maybe not considerate but come on everyone knows she isn’t bright.
