news crew gets mugged covering the Kate Steinle shooting in San Francisco.

Sure, working for da joos!!1! Most Mexicans work for da joos!!1! nowadays, whether directly or through umbrella coverage.

Butt… butt… butt… what about…

I was in LA earlier this year and went for a walk at the Santa Monica Pier… and got rained on badly.

It never rains in Southern California my ass.

Was I the only one who was thinking this sounds like a scene out of the movie Nightcrawler?

Curiosity. Education. To clear up misconceptions. For fun. A multitude of reasons.

Which is not to say you ought to know, after all you can’t know everything, just that there are many reasons you might know.

I don’t know how far it is from Little Rock to Memphis, but I still know they’re different fucking cities.

I live in Nevada and would guess that Little Rock to Texarkana is maybe 150 miles. Little Rock to Memphis about the same.

Looking them up I was a bit high on both but within 20 miles.

In any case not a completely implausible mistake to make.

 well it doesn’t… Except when it does hard enough to mudslide your entire neighborhood into another. And that’s when it’s not on fire.

I still rather prefer wetter Santa Monica/Venice (*) to inland LA if only for the more livable temperature…

(* OP, do take the walk from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach to get a taste of LA Freak culture  )

I am wondering why you care about this news story from a place so far away. And even if you care, I wonder why up you post it here to make sure the rest of us don’t miss it.

Hey, having a news crew be mugged just as they are about to go live IS an unusual situation. And this IS the MPSIMS subforum.

I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often; those are some expensive cameras. A few years ago, people in SF were getting mugged for their tablets & smartphones while they were waiting in line for a bus or rideshare. I imagine people stopped checking their email & playing Kandy Krush after that…

You always wanted to visit a pier but had no idea it was in Los Angeles.

I too could have made a reasonable guess regarding the distance between Little Rock and Texarkana. But I’m wondering what the point of that question is. Little Rock and Texarkana aren’t Los Angeles snd San Francisco.

Los Angeles is the type of place that has things that millions people who have never been there or live thousands of miles away wang to see. Little Rock isn’t.

Knowing some basic facts about Los Angeles and San Francisco is reflective ofas certain minimum level of cultural awareness.

A smartphone is a lot easier to steal and fence than a TV camera.

If you were on the pier waiting for the ferry to take you to Alcatraz, that might explain it.

My wife suggested the drug cartels might want the professional cameras to film their drug executions. They’ve recently released footage of beheadings. I won’t link, but easily found with google. Professional quality PR footage for the web is getting to be a big thing with terror groups and the drug cartels.

I know they have plenty of money to buy professional equipment. But I guess if they can take what they want its easier. I’m just speculating. You’re average crackhead doesn’t use a BMW 7 to commit muggings. I wouldn’t think that Professional broadcast cameras are easily sold either. They’d be very hard to pawn for quick cash.

Every visitor to Pier 39 gets robbed on a daily basis.

I remember visiting as a kid, and the first thing I noted was that buying tokens for the arcade gave you 3/$1 instead of the typical 4.

But you’re on the internet. I have random/tangential questions like yours pop up in my mind all the time when reading threads; know what I do? Google it!

Here’s what I would have done if I had the same question. Maps.google.com –> for starting point, “Embarcadero, San Francisco” and for destination, “Santa Monica pier”.

I chose Embarcadero because that was specifically mentioned as part of (near?) the pier in your own link in the OP. Note that for the destination, I did not type in a city or state, just “Santa Monica pier”. So this is only using the information you had in front of you. Took less than 30 seconds and I’m on my phone, not a computer.

Not one damn bit.

Here’s an article about robberies of Bay Area news crews.

And I was just over at sfgate (SF news - the Chronicle) and read about a ‘ride along’ with SFPD on the homeless beat.

As I mentioned once - the tech boom has brand new condo towers going up in very dicey areas.

Across an overpass from a very large homeless camp (where an old street just ends in dirt) is a new condo tower with 2-bedroom units going for $1.5 MILLION.

Something’s going to give. And it is not going to be pretty.
