I lived in a predominately Muslim country from age 7-11. I went to school with Muslim kids, I went to their homes almost every day, they were my best friends. The only effect it has had on my life is that I don’t pee down my leg when I hear the word “Muslim.”
Seriously, if you think it means something major in your personal development as a person, you are profoundly ignorant. Seriously, you are.
Well, I’ve heard he has supposedly renounced the Koran, even though he swore on one for his inauguration. Only 34% of Americans – smartest people in the Solar System – believe he’s Christian, and the percentage is even lower among Americans who actually voted in the Presidential election for … an American! But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he’s not a Muslim anymore.
But, as far as I know, no one at the White House has ever denied that he “swings dead cats counterclockwise over his head near a fresh grave during a new moon.” If it weren’t true, why aren’t they denying it?
At this point, I’m afraid I won’t believe them even if they do deny it. I think us Patriots should demand photographs of Obama not swinging dead cats counterclockwise.

For me, the formative years part is neither here nor there. I just don’t see why spending your early years in a Muslim country means anything. What I think would mean the most is what your nuclear family is doing. I’ve lived pretty much my whole life, except for a few early years, in the USA, but I’m not even remotely Christian, and I’d be weirded out if someone said they wouldn’t be surprised if I was. Not because being Christian is bad, but because there’s really no reason to think that.

What Chess is saying isn’t nearly as bad as you’d all like it to be. Can we please refrain from latching on, fear dear life, onto a few words of his entire posts? He said he wouldn’t be surprised because he believes Obama to be an atheist, but if he isn’t, it’s not so completely beyond the realm of possibility that he is a Muslim, considering he had a father who was at one point Muslim, and lived in Indonesia for a while, that Chess would be surprised. Islam might be his “background religion.” That’s not nearly the same thing as being some crazy “I’ll bet you one trillion dollars that Obama is a secret Muslim nigger from Mars who is related to Hitler” teabagging loony.
Mind you folks, I disagree with some of what he’s saying, but still. I agree that Obama is faking religion, but I would be surprised to find Obama was Muslim, mainly because I am so thoroughly convinced that he is atheist. I’d be somewhat less surprised (but still very surprised) to find he was Christian, and believe that’s probably his background religion, not Islam. While he may have lived in Indonesia for a few years as a child, and his father may have been a Muslim, 1) he spent most of his life in the U.S. where Christianity was the default, and 2) he wasn’t raised by his father; he was raised by his mother who couldn’t have been less Muslim if she tried. Also, it’s worth pointing out that his father has abandoned Islam before Obama was born. And then plus all that stuff about him having his children baptized and marrying Michelle (unless her secret background religion is Islam too), and yes, him saying he’s a Christian over and over again, and going to church (sometimes) carries some weight, but I don’t take it as the gospel.
At this point, Obama is so far removed from Islam that I’d be equally surprised to find he was Muslim as I’d be if I discovered he was a Buddhist. The tenuous ties to Indonesia when he was in third grade are shoddy at best.

There’s praying and seeking spiritual solace (which I’d sure as hell need if I had The World’s Highest Pressure Job), and there’s making a big show of making public policy based on what you “hear” during those prayer sessions.
Back when I was a campus pastor, I’d’ve thought it was healthy if a student said they prayed before a final. But if they said that Sky Pixie told them to mark D: None Of The Above on Question 43, I’d worry.
And what really scares me about some politicians is that they’re blindly following what some pastor (or radio personality) told them The Bible “really means”… I was always waiting for GWB to slip and say “Well, our policies are bringing us closer to Armageddon, which I’m all in favor of. Because, well, you know, then Jesus’ll come back sooner. Heh, heh.”
