News from the road

Well, I registered to vote in NYC so I’ll have to go back there next month. I decided to head west, and we all know that if you head west from NYC, you eventualy end up in Chicago (well you have to go around a lake or two)–naturaly I bought a my very first copy of the reader and I cut out Cecil’s column for my scrap book.
My mom convinced me to stop by home (Texas) so that’s where I am now, she’s been trying to get me to stay but I’ve been here a day and I’m feeling restless already.
My PCMCIA modem died so I have no internet access from the road anymore. I plan on getting another one from my dad in a couple days, so hopefully that problem won’t last much longer.
I’ve only spent $112 so far, so I’d say I’m going pretty well, I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
There are alot more drifters in americia than I previously thought, I’ve been at this for a month and I’ve already met six others.

Wisdom from the road:

  1. Homeless people are almost always kind.
  2. Bus stations are not a good place to sleep. (see #6)
  3. It’s hard to leave New England without seeing it all.
  4. No matter what action movies tell you, you can not leap from a moving train. (don’t beleive me? I have the busted chin to prove it.)
  5. A tent is a hitchhiker’s best friend.
  6. Skateboarders are assholes (some of them stole my backpack in Philidelphia–I chased them down and got it back. bastards.)
  7. Two ways not to get mugged: a)look like you don’t have any money. b)look like you have a gun.
  8. Police are assholes, and they hate drifters (I haven’t been to a major city where I wasn’t hastled)

Good to hear from you, eggo. Keep keeping us posted.

Incidently, you might wanna head back up to the Northeast a little early. If you haven’t already seen the fall leaves up here (I don’t recall where you started from), it’s worth the trip.

Take care, and watch those skateboarders and cops.
