News source needed

I need a new news source. The BBC implemented a new layout and no longer suits my needs. The new layout seems heavy on multimedia features and white space; it’s no longer as information-dense as it used to be and what information is there has skewed towards the tabloid warm-n-fuzzy rather than harder world news. The Washington Post too has that video block playing a prominent role on their home page. It’s not so bad, but two or three of the few rotating stories in it are sports or other inane non-news items (no offence to sports or gossip hounds, it’s just not the type of news I’m looking for). Google news is close, but for some reason they still don’t let you completely exclude news sources (i.e., I don’t consider either Brietbart or Fox reliable sources). Obviously Huff, TPM, Drudge, etc. aggregate news, but I don’t want such a US focus or such partisanship.

That’s not to say that I don’t want someone sifting through the bajillions of stories out there. That is, there are straight news aggregaters that just dump stories. Some prioritizing and triage is fine. I just want to open a browser and hit two or three sources to get caught up on the major/important happenings of the world (note world, not just my monkeysphere).

I know this comes up every so often, but given the changing nature of the net figured it’s okay to ask again.

I don’t really like the new BBC layout either, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that the actual news has changed. The tabs are along the top instead of down the side, and you may have to scroll down a little further to get to the “most read/shared” box, though as a serious news seeker this presumably wouldn’t bother you anyway. The content is exactly the same - they didn’t fire everyone and hire morons in their places, or turn into Fox, just because they redesigned the website.
