Didn’t McCain already say that he wasn’t going to run again? I seem to recall that.
Yes, His term ends 2023 … or when he retires or dies. Whichever comes first. His term ending is unlikely to be what comes first.
Fuck that smarmy asshole.
He is a smarmy asshole but that was pretty funny.
Even a smarmy asshole can be on point, even if by chance.
There no doubt will be many chances to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s still half a year away to midterms and that is lots of time for different partisan enthusiasms to wane or build. The worst enemy the D side has now from the election perspective is complacency.
Not sure “shitting their pants” really helps the cause. Complacency is far more deadly (see: Hillary in the rust belt).
It would help the cause if the total number of campaign dollars is limited, causing them to “waste” money on otherwise secure races whether or not they need to. It would not help the cause if it causes people who previously thought that their desired policies were safe to donate more money.
The deep pockets still are only so deep and donating to losing candidates is considered a poor investment. They had record GOP super PAC fundraising quarter one already. And they’ve seen that their ROI has been poor with the same consistent shift despite their monies spent. Will they be thrilled when they keep getting asked for more? Or will they decide the House is a lost cause, focus on a few Senate races, and plan for the next cycle?
GOP incumbents deciding that now is their term limit also makes Democratic gains more probable. Ryan’s choice of that may impact the fundraising targets too.
No question that over-confidence and complacency must be avoided. But demoralizing the other operatives of the other side is more good than bad.
