NFC East 2009

Betting pool on how many video board hits at Cowboys Stadium this year?

I’m guessing none this week unless the Cowboys’ punter hits it. Feagles certainly won’t.

For the whole season, I’ll go with an even dozen.

I imagine Mat McBriar has been told in no uncertain terms that he’s on the first plane back to Australia if he hits it, and as Mike Schlereth put it this morning, “Feagles couldn’t hit it if you let him punt it twice”.

For the season I think 12 is reasonable, but I think there will be one game where it gets hit 10 times because the punters are both trying to get on SportsCenter.

Cowboys shooting themselves in the feet against NYG. 4th Quarter battle.

Coincidentally, I’m having a turnover for dessert.

The Cowboys are embarrassing the Giants on the ground. Barber would have gone all the way on that lead-changing drive but he looked like he pulled a quad.

Jesus Christ, talk about all the bounces going the other way…

Cowboys blow it to close Texas Stadium and to open Cowboys Stadium.

Holy shit I was getting so fed up with the announcers and pundits back in the studio talking about how the Cowboys were dominating the Giants. The Giants were stalling out in the red zone and settling for field goals. As usually happens in such a game, the Giants had more yards and time of possession. That’s pretty much the textbook definition of dominating a game, so why the hell did everyone keep going on about how the Cowboys were dominating? Made no sense.

Yes, I understand that the Cowboys rushed for 251 yards to the Giants 97, but c’mon, the Giants passed for 330 yards to the Cowboys 127. That’s a whupping through the air, and while letting up 251 on the ground is embarassing, it’s not like the Giants were held to only 50 yards or something.

Looks like the Giants are firmly in a state of redzone-itis, recalling problems of the pre-Plaxico era. sigh

Yeah, it sucks. But I can’t help feeling a little relief now that the pressure is off somewhat. NOW they can just play without all the “do or die” tension of the stadium opener.

I still hate it, though.

(And for any who would smirk about TO and the Bills winning big this week, let me be the first to point out that they were playing against the same team Dallas did last week. If the Cowboys’ victory can be laid at the door of the Buc’s crappy defense, so can the Bills’–and TO didn’t exactly break any of HIS personal records! ;))

I watched both the Redskins and Cowboys games in their entirities. I know a win’s a win and all that, but as a Cowboy’s fan I’m feeling better about my team in a loss than many Redskins fans are about their team. I mean, how often does a winning team at home leave the field to a chorus of boos?

At least the Cowboys played pretty well–I certainly see good things for the season. A few quirky bounces and calls, and turnovers of course, but they matched up well. The Redskins, on the other hand? Talk about inept. There is no hope for that team. The question is not whether they win some games, it’s whether they’ll hit 10 points in any given game.

Pretty damn entertaining game there in Arlington. Yeah, I hate to see the Boys lose but thought their overall effort, sans Romo’s, was pretty good. For the most part they showed talent and desire. Some shortcomings appeared to be due to the fact it’s early in the season and can be improved upon. I was hoping that since Tony is single that maybe he might stay focused for an entire game but am afraid his shortcomings made the difference last night.

Eli Manningham looked good, quite the tandem there.

Now, I fully admit a bias, but that game last night, combined with the Redskins poor showing and the Eagles’ getting stomped, makes me think the NFC isn’t the juggernaut that people think. The piss poor tackling, the seive-like secondary, Romo’s suckitude, and the scoring fiesta kinda did not represent the mythical NFC East very well.

Yes, but other than one broken tackle by Jacobs they would have been held under 50 yards. Anyway, that’s not the point- the point is that the Cowboys’ offensive line and running backs were absolutely dominating the Giants (rightly) heralded front seven, and only Jason Garrett’s (as usual) horrible playcalling and Romo’s determination to throw the ball to the Giants allowed you to win.

Marty Schottenheimer would go 15-1 with that Cowboys roster.

ETA: Eli, Manningham and Steve Smith look like they’re going to rack up the yardage all season. On the other hand, they really need to find a way to score in the red zone.

Oh, and I’d just like to bring everyone’s attention back to this:

Hot damn, that was a sweet game. Nothing like a good nailbiter to make sure I’m tired as hell on Monday morning. Darth Jerry gets his billion-dollar Death Star just got blown up, and the Cowboys still can’t perform under pressure. Love. It.

Once again, Eli gets the ball with about three minutes left, and you might as well call “game over” then and there. Chalk up another one for Mr. Goddamned Superclutch.

As an aside, I don’t seriously wish injury on any player, but come December 6th, if Justin Tuck were to remove Flozell Adams’ scumbag, cheap-shotting head, I’ll have to hope the refs are all looking elsewhere.

One other thing – stemming off Adams’ trip of Tuck and subsequent injury, I propose a rule change:

If you’re not aware, Tuck had Adams completely beat, and was about to have a clear path to Romo. Since he was schooled so badly, Adams decided it was time to Cowboy up – he tripped Tuck, who suffered a shoulder injury on the play. This occurred inside two minutes left in the first half.

Now, when the game stops due to injury within one of the two-minute warnings, it costs the team suffering the injury a time-out. Ok, I’m fine with that – it stops players from faking an injury just to give the rest of the team a breather/time to strategize. However, I propose that in cases where the injury stems from a personal foul, the time out be charged to the team who committed the penalty.

Not a huge change, but at least it removes the “insult to injury” bit that is currently in place.

Tripping isn’t a personal foul. It’s only a 10 yard penalty.

Actually, Flozell’s trip appeared to be one of the least egregious fouls on the evening. I don’t think he was trying to injure Tuck or even doing something he knew could lead to injury. Tuck was getting by him and he looked to just be trying to slow him down. Tuck being injured by that was kinda bizarre. In watching the reply it was difficult to pinpoint how it even happened.

Far worse were two late hits, one by each team. In the second half a Giant receiver or return man was down and then had a Cowboy hit him late. The Giants bench erupted and I agree that should have been called. There also was the late hit, out of bounds even, by Boley on Crayton causing injury. It might have been just a play after Boley was called for the flagrant facemask that spun around Miles Austin. Boley’s hit after Crayton had been knocked out of bounds and was laying on the ground wasn’t called either.

That is an excellent suggestion.

I also think Adams should be suspended though. That was a sweep kick and not just tripping. It was dirty and cheap.

Fun game, neither team looked like world beaters though. Most importantly, the Giants won and the Cowboys lost at there Stadium opener.

How about if a player commits two personal fouls he be removed from the game?

Regarding the Stadium opener issue, does anyone really care about that? From Wiki: “Giants Stadium opened on October 10, 1976, as 76,042 fans witnessed a loss by the Giants to the Dallas Cowboys.” I didn’t know that and frankly could care less. Seriously, who remembers?
