NFC East 2010

Just wanted to share…

Great link Hal and it is so true.

Amusing, but my favorite line by far was:

Cowboys fire Wade… JG interim HC.

Terrible, terrible move. Wade Phillips was the best coach the Cowboys have had in years.

I wonder who is going to run the defense.

Campo? Who knows?

Agreed. Though, well, I’m a 'Skin fan, not a Giants fan.

Anyway, I generally think that, unlike other major sports, firing a coach mid-season in football just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and this is a perfect example of why. The Cowboys made the Divisional round of play-offs last year, and would have gotten as far or farther in previous years had Romo not repeatedly choked in spectacular fasion. This year, between some pretty damn high expectations, in no small part brought on by Jerry Jones, and some pretty major injuries, there is just no way they could compete. Hell, before the season started I expected them to do poorly because of all the drama. And, of course, while Romo isn’t an elite quarterback in the league in my mind, Kitna is definitely a huge step down; that injury absolutely sealed the season for them.

So, in this case, this firing reminds me much of the 2000 Redskins and the firing of Norv Turner, where certainly the coach bears some fault, but the bigger problem is bad team chemistry, huge expectations going into the season, and a meddling owner. In the Redskins’ case, it just made things worse and led to a number of mediocre seasons, and I don’t expect much different to happen here. Jerry Jones is notorious for his meddling, and not many coaches are going to want to work for him, particularly in the context of this firing.

We can only hope that this results in many miserable years to come for the Cowboys.

Well as long as they hang on to Romo as their QB, I think Dallas is still making the right moves.

I just hope the Giants don’t believe the press they’re getting this week and are ready to crush Dallas next Sunday.

Jerry Jones said he’s going to effect a “culture change” in the Cowboys’ organization.

I’m assuming that means he’ll be selling the team and STFU.

The East isn’t looking too hot in the division rankings so far, halfway through the season and with most of the divisional games yet to play. (Meaning little chance to improve their standing.)

#1 AFC South 14-10 (58%)
#2 NFC South 12-9 (57%)
#3 AFC North 11-9 (55%)
#4 NFC East 13-13 (50%)
#4 AFC East 10-10 (50%)
#6 NFC North 11-12 (48%)
#7 AFC West 12-14 (46%)
#8 NFC West 9-15 (38%)

#1 AFC 21-17 (55%)
#2 NFC 17-21 (45%)

Of course the two Western divisions continue to be the worst divisions in the league, year after year after year.

The East does a little better by DVOA, as the top two teams are NYG and Phi, respectively.

  1. AFC South +9.9% (3, 9, 16, 24)
  2. AFC North +9.8% (4, 11, 14, 18)
  3. NFC East +6.9% (1,2, 22, 27)
  4. AFC West +2.2% (5, 7, 20, 28)
  5. AFC East +1.2% (8, 12, 15, 30)
  6. NFC North -3.1% (6, 19, 21, 26)
  7. NFC South -7.4% (10, 13, 23, 32)
  8. NFC West -20.8% (17, 25, 29, 31) !!!

Well when you have the Redskins, who basically decided they weren’t even going to try to win their last game, and the Cowboys, who basically decided they weren’t going to try to win even one game all season… it kinda hurts your win/loss record.

I wonder if Philly might have gotten the short stick, missing the Wade-led Cowboys for two games with the Garret version.

<spit-take> A five year extension for McNabb? $40 million guaranteed, up to $88 million??

Daniel Snyder, I believe I speak for Giants fans everywhere – yay, at the moment I even speak for those cursed to be Eagles and Cowboys fans – when I say “Thank you…thank you so much for being so colossally clueless as to how to run a football team”.

So the Shanahan era lasted 8 games. What’s the over/under on Gruden’s tenure?

Doubly so for Cowboys fans, Danny makes Jerry look like George Halas.

This game hasn’t done much for making this deal look good. McNabb has always been a better QB than passer in my opinion. That INT was just another McNabb off-target pass that the receiver couldn’t reach, getting deflected to the defender.

He just showed what I’ve thought was more his strength, reading the defense and rolling out to deliver the TD pass, no precision passing needed. I wonder if the Washington defense will show up at some point.

To be fair, he had been flushed out of the pocket (and even hit on the play), and was throwing against his body. And had the pass not been deflected by the receiver, it would have been harmlessly incomplete.

Not much to say in his defense for the other picks. Those were awful.

RIP Dandy Don Meredith.
