NFL 2023-2024: Divisional Round

That’s some crazy parity.
Some crazy NFC Championship Game starts for the 49ers… Since their Division Round loss to the Buccaneers in 2002, they’ve either made it to the NFC Championship or missed the playoffs entirely. Overall, including this season, the 49ers have made 35% of all NFC Championship Games (but unfortunately have gone 7-11 thus far).

I think it did but don’t recall if that was mentioned or not.

Wide right, in Buffalo. Wow.

Bills-Chiefs was a fun game to watch (at least the 40 minute replay version that i watched anyway).

To me, the real difference in the game was: in the first half nobody could stop the run, In the second half the Chiefs figured out how to stop it, and the Bills never did. (well, the fumble out of the endzone was a pretty lucky break for the Bills that kept it close too).

If you watch the replay, you can see that the wind is pushing the flags on the uprights to the right, but it doesn’t appear to be a strong, sustained gust. I think the kick started to the right and the wind helped it along.

What are the odds for Detroit next week vs the 49’ers? I’m hoping they can pull it off. Just being in the Super Bowl would blow Detroit and Michigan away…winning it would bet he greatest championship since either:

  • Red Wings in 1997
  • Michigan…just this month. lol

Also, do they really take two weeks before the Super Bowl? Seems like an unnecessary off week if so.

Yep. They tried having the Superbowl the week after the conference championships, but it’s really not enough time for the teams to get prepared. You need a good four or five days just for all the media stuff and everyone you’ve ever known in your life coming out of the woodwork asking for tickets.

I will put the odds in a new thread in a day or two, but here’s what they are at the moment, according to DraftKings:

Ravens are favored by 3 points.
Niners are favored by 6.5 points.

I say ‘at the moment’ because right after the Chiefs game, the Ravens/Chiefs line opened at the Ravens being favored by 3.5. In the first hour or so, it went down to 3.

Also taking two weeks break allows time for the Pro Bowl. Fans can enjoy flag football, the tug of war, and “Kick Tac Toe” while they wait for the Superb Owl.

The primary reason is it’s another week of commercials and content. But it’s also helpful for players to get healthy and fans to make travel arrangements.

Well, yes, at the end of the day the business of football is business. They need time to properly hype the game.

Players having an off week cuts both ways - rust can apparently be a real thing.

And while fan travel is a legitimate concern, actual tickets to the game are very limited - almost half are given to the players, coaches, and associated personnel of the two teams plus the host team of the stadium (so, the Raiders are going to get ~10% of the tickets) with another 25-35% going to corporate sponsors. And there are several more that are given away as promotions or contests or whatever to further advertise. At the end of the day maybe 5% of tickets to the game will actually be made available to the public in regular sales. Season ticket holders might get lucky enough to buy some from their teams, but teams will take care of their players and coaches first, then their own sponsors, with the remainder, if any, going on sale to their season ticket holders

Some of the tickets above will eventually go onto the ticket brokers and that’s where you see the multi-thousand dollar prices. But there generally aren’t many of those (which is why they’re so expensive)

Fan travel is more about the stuff surrounding the game than actually attending in person, i.e. more revenue generating activities for the host city, the NFL, and for sponsors.

You don’t want to leave too much time between games or it gets a little obvious but they absolutely want to milk this cow for everything it’s worth

A Lions vs. Chiefs Superbowl would be a nice full circle rematch from week one, where the Lions beat the defending Superbowl champ Chiefs. But despite the fact that I’m hoping against hope for the Lions to make the SB, and I like the Chiefs more the Ravens, realistically I think it’s going to be Ravens - 49ers.

And here I thought it was the constant camera shots of Taylor Swift and her flavor of the month.

Just speaking for myself: I have no problems with jokes and complaints about excessive coverage of Taylor Swift. But the “she’s had too many boyfriends!” jokes are rooted in double-standards at best and misogyny at worst, and I’d be happy if they were retired.

They have been dating for over 6 months…

As far as the game, the Bills defense just couldn’t stop the Chiefs. One punt all game isn’t going to do it. Their offense did a great job in the first half keeping the ball and limiting how much damage could be done by Mahomes and Co., but that’s a dangerous way to play if you can’t stop the other team.

A few different bounces and it could have been a very comfortable Chiefs win. Of course, if a few of those deep balls were caught the Bills could have pulled it out.

I do agree that the missed kick didn’t decide the game. I would have put pretty good money on Mahomes leading the Chiefs into FG range with the amount of time left even if Bass made that kick.

And before Kelce she had been in a stable relationship for 6 years.

Though I think shirtless Jason Kelce stole the show last night.

I know nothing about her or her personal life other than that she’s extremely popular. I also don’t know her boyfriend’s name. My wife had to tell me that they were a couple. I honestly wouldn’t care if she was changing lovers on a weekly basis, as it doesn’t impact me in the least. It probably wasn’t the best off-the-cuff descriptor, but it wasn’t based on any knowledge of her dating habits.

We watched most of the Bills/Chiefs game. While I don’t watch football as a rule, the wife is from Buffalo, so we made an exception, although we did change channels at halftime and returned for the last three minutes. Pretty close game.

It’s good that your flavor of the month was there to explain things to you.

As above, the business of football is business. Apparently she’s good for business.

As long as people are complaining, it means they’re watching. But the nature of those complaints does reveal more about some people than they might realize

The last time they purposefully did only one week, one team didn’t have time to install any new plays or signals that their previous coach, who was now on the opposite team, didn’t know. Then their All-Pro center went AWOL.

Well, I don’t think Chiefs fans are complaining. Or at least, they shouldn’t be. As I posted in this or the wildcard thread, Kelce’s stats are demonstrably better when Swift attends the game. And he had an outstanding game last night.

As long as Swift doesn’t dump him before the Chiefs’ season is over, she’s an overall benefit to the team.
